Huge copperhead in GA

Reminds me of those hunting photos where the camera and field of view skew perception and make the bear/pig/prairie dog look 12' tall/long.

I don't want to find that snake... but the way he is holding it out and the clarity of the photo in all planes leads me to believe the photo wasn't photoshopped, but merely taken in such a way as to make the snake appear much larger than actual.

Copperheads are beautiful but not wise to mess with them. Our Lab cornered one along the driveway couple years ago, fortunately I was able to pull him away before he was bitten. Retrieved my snake killer shovel but he was gone when I got back.
In my first hand experience with them they are an aggressive snake...second to only the cotton mouth...
BTW...they often smell like cucumbers...

Hmmm never got my nose close enough to smell one! :D Most people are bitten when they step on them in the woods, practically invisible in the leaves.

Around here they are often found around wild berry patches...they prey on the birds that are after the berries/seeds...getting a slight whiff of cucumber like smell is a good heads up to be careful when picking berries...

Speaking of Snakes in GA -

My wife and I where out on the Savannah River yesterday and she came upon something I have never seen before a swimming rattle snake. Hard to tell by the attached pictures but it was a good sized, about 4-feet long, what I think was an eastern diamond back although it may have been a light colored timber rattler. Snake was perfectly comfortable in the water stopping several times to check us out when we got to close. This spot is about 40-miles downriver from Augusta and nothing but woods and farmland on either side and about 100-yards across.

Wish we had gotten better pictures but the current and wind were pushing the jetski around.

That, right there, would keep me out of the water for good...
