Tried the BeyondMeat burger at A&W last week, like the name implies theres no meat in there, the patty is all plant-based protein. Tasted great, a glimpse into the future maybe?

I don't know how long meat substitutes have been around, but definitely a long time. About 71 years ago, I went in the hospital one night for an emergency appendectomy and was there for 5 days. It was a Seventh Day Adventist hospital; didn't serve meat. Lots of people hated that hospital for that reason, but it was a good hospital otherwise. The meat substitute that I remember looked like a small hamburger patty, and to me had a bit of a fried okra flavor. I thought it was quite tasty myself.

When it comes to hamburger, we eat government beef, I can get all I want and it's pretty much FREE around here...

But, I did buy some T-bones last week, they were $3.99 per pound and that's something I never do...

For the reason's mentioned here; I raise my own beef. Most any time of the year I can go to the freezer and pull any cut we feel like eating.:licking:

But if you add the cost of buying the land and raising the beef.......maybe it's not very cheap.

If I may ask, what's government beef?

I remember government cheese. My wife's grandparents were elderly and qualified for free surplus government cheese. I think that was back in the 80's? They'd get several pounds of what looked like a brick of American Cheese a few times per year. We were eating that stuff constantly.

I raise my own beef and my hamburgers taste better than most of the steaks you'll find at the supermarkets. If you can find some local raised beef and buy some of their ground beef you'll see what I mean.

I raise my own pork and poultry but sometimes I just need that good, red meat. I don't eat enough though to justify stocking up the way some of you do, in a couple of months both of my freezers will be full again. It's definitely not to save money though, you can buy a frozen turkey at Thanksgiving for less than what I paid for poults this spring. (OTOH my brother's heart Dr has told him not to eat store bought turkey). I was just surprised at the price differential; the $4.99 hamburg was in a 10 lb package and almost pure white with fat; while the $2.59 steak was nice amd lean If I really wanted ground beef I could have saved by running the steaks through my meat grinder a couple of times.

I would trade you beef for fresh pork and chicken if you were close buy, I get pork from a friend when he has it but he's usually sold out.

^^^^ I would take you up on that. I can raise pork for about what it goes for in the grocery store, but it's much better quality. Someday I will raise a couple of steer just to say that I did. It seems like they really should be kept through 2 summers though to make it worthwhile. You may not have found that to be the case.
