I checked the oil in my tractor today and it was black as coal, not familiar with diesel engines, is this typical?

What type of filter and oil do you guys change with? I dont want to call and ask dealer cause I have no intention of buying it from him.

Maybe one of you guys knows a good part number for filter that you like?

Its a Kubota 6100E

Yes, it's 100% normal for the oil to be jet black...even right after a change...(it's a diesel thing)...you're a "fuel" man now...!

Yeah, that's normal. Just go & buy the oil filter from him and ask what weight is recommended. The "weight" is what you need to find out but get a oil for diesel's. NAPA is pretty good at crossing part numbers if you really have something against your local dealer.

It will probably be black yes. What oil filter is on it now? If it's OEM, cross reference it to NAPA or whatever brand you can get loacally at a good price. I don't use OEM filters or oil, it cost more, it's not close by and most any of the major manufactures are as good if not better..

I use 5w40 Mobil 1 full synthetic oil with Mobil 1 filters and have done so for many years..

I have been using Rotella T 15/40 since I think around 1990 or so in diesel garden tractors, CUT and diesel trucks. I have been getting Mobile Delvac 1300 15/40 the last 3-4 years because it is formulated for diesels and I can get it cheap by the 5 gallon buckets. I generally don't use synthetic because I change oil yearly anyway and don't need the longevity.

For me I find I can get OEM John Deere filters over the internet probably the same price as a dealer charges. I would think Kubota filters on line would be competitive, but I wouldn't be afraid to cross ref. at NAPA.

Don't forget to change the fuel filters at least every other oil change. Water kills injectors.

Get your filter from the dealer or Messicks if your dealer is too far away to be worth it. Without knowing how many hours are on your tractor, there may be more to it than just the engine oil and filter. If it is a new tractor, and HST then you usually have to change that filter as well at 50 hours.

I use Rotella T6 5w40, but that is based on the temperature where I use my tractor....among other things.....though that will be different for your warmer climate.

And great time to grease everything as well.

Very normal for oil to be black, like was posted it is a diesel thing

The oil in a few of my diesels does not turn black right away, others do as soon as you start them up. I think it has to do with how completely the old oil drains out. On those that to not turn black right away, they do in fairly short order maybe 10 hours or so. So as was mentioned, black oil in a diesel is normal.

Welcome to the world of diesel. I once changed the oil on a diesel and I checked the level while it still in the driveway and it was just as black as before the change. There was enough residual oil to turn the new oil jet black.
