How many of you have had a call saying they missed a call from you when you didn't call them? I have had it happen a few times and my call history clearly shows only the incoming call. Seems like the phone companies could figure out a way to stop number spoofing.

They can. It's called an analog land line. Once everything went digital, it became super easy to spoof phone numbers.

I've never had that happen, but am constantly getting "local" numbers on my caller ID which have been hacked from elsewhere.

This time they got my number by running a free fill dirt ad on craigslist. I found the same exact ad on the other side of the state. These scammers were pretty slick and giving location details in each one to make the ad look real but all 3 ads had the same format and asked for email and tele. I found an actual contact form for CL that I filled out and all 3 of the ads I found were flagged and removed as soon as I sent it. Far more effective than just clicking the prohibited flag at top.

The real answer on stopping them is the phone company COULD but it doesn't affect their bottom line so they don't. Eventually government will have to pass legislation requiring them to do so. Then they will scream too much government intervention after they neglect to do the right thing on their own.

First off, if I do not recognize the number, I do not pick up. No message, no return call. Now, that said, if you have the time and want to have some fun, pick up the phone, wait for the actual human voice and then take it from there. Keeping civil, regardless of your preference, ask the person out on a date or something. Have some fun. The point is to waste the callers time.

Junk calls are like junk mail. The postal service makes money on them as do the phone carriers.

I have a few times. Getting called by a scammer with a local area code is more common.

I live in a small town of 2-3 thousand & it has its own prefix.. I get calls from that prefix 3-4x a day.. & NOBODY has my landline phone #..
AND.. its actually "unlisted" w/ the phone co..{not in phone book}
I just looked at my call logs>> 27 this week.. w/ no msg..

If my landline rings & I don't pick up & THEN my cell rings.. I KNOW its important..

Some spoofers are so dumb ... I get caller IDs that say "Not In Service" and at least once lately got a CID that listed the number/line I answered on. :laughing:

As for the Do Not Call List 'not working' ... coincidentally, my shopping list doesn't pick up and deliver my groceries. :(

When I 'Google' a number (all toll frees and those I wasn't expecting so 99%) I get a chuckle at folks who post on caller complaint sites (800 notes, etc) and say "please stop calling me" .. like scammers are checking in there too after getting their number from the DNC database. :rolleyes:

Activating/using your voicemail at least assures a scammer that your number is legit and can be sold to the others. I thought texting was a way to avoid that, but have learned that it's really to stretch an otherwise 30 second call into 10 min of back & forth with both parties getting the last word so as to 'not seem rude. wow ...

Just give me a call sometime. ;)

If there is one thing I am to telemarketers/scammers is rude. I am a rude crude SOB. I like to start psychoanalyzing them and try to make them question why they don't have a real job and why they are doing this. All of this of course is to take up their time.
