Has anyone found Yanmar's advice on screw in to check level?

My YM336D has screw-in dipsticks for engine oil, transmission fluid and front axle lube. My original 336D Operation Manual, in the Service section, has the same line of text in the separate level-checking instructions for all three of those :

"..... Insert dipstick to rest on threads, but do not screw it in. ...."

FWIW, no guarantee that applies across-the-board for all Yanmars with screw-in dipsticks (but IMHO likely).

^That's^ the procedure most common in industry but I have encountered a few cases of explicit 'screw-it-in' instructions over the years. Obviously, it's always best to check the applicable specific servicing instructions if at all possible.

There it is. If its that way for a 336 i would bet money that its that way across the board on all models with those type sticks. I think i have seen it somewhere before, maybe for my 4 wheeler??? Its a honda which follows suit with what norm said.

The smaller engines are more critical and will blow smoke if overfilled which is what can happen if you dont thread in and your suppose to , to check. I doubt our tractors with suck it up and blow it out like a mower will. Probaly more room for error on the tractor than a small engine.

Thanks. I'm going to assume that's Yanmar's general design philosophy and it applies to the other models as well.

You're quite welcome, glad to help, IMHO your conclusion is a very safe bet

I'd also bet that your earlier comment about 'press-fit' dipsticks is correct, too ..... absent threads, push it 'fully home' to check level.

I’ve always screwed the threaded plugs in to check. I feel like if it was an important issue the stick would say so.

Interesting philosophy, I suppose there might be an argument about differences between "important" and "proper" when it comes to maintenance procedures.

If all of the "proper" maintenance procedures covered in an operator's manual were fully detailed in-situ on the tractor, it'd be a solid mass of instruction stickers.

But hey, whatever works for you!

(Yes, I understand that in the case of most fluid levels, the difference between 'threaded-in' and 'sitting on threads' is likely within the acceptable 'immediately safe' tolerance range; just means that with the resultant slightly lower fill level you've reduced some of the design capacity intended to provide best lifetime service, IMHO. And yes, lots of folks do lots of less-than-proper things without ever suffering a consequence.)

For my YM2000 one manual said to check the engine oil with the dipstick threaded in and another manual said to check the transmission oil with it resting on the threads. My manuals are at the cabin so I can't check them right now. If I remember correctly I think it was the Hoye owners manual for the engine oil and the I&T service manual for the transmission oil. Thought it was strange that there would be a difference on the same tractor so maybe one manual is incorrect. I try to keep them at a level that would be correct either way I check them.

When I need an oil capacity for a piece of equipment I look it up on the engine manufactures website for that engine model, shop and owners manuals are not always accurate.

For me it's in to the threads and always have to go a little over 5 Quarts.
