Tomato, potato although the Greeks in the chip shops pronounce it 'potatto' and Tony becomes Tonnee.
Cumin and basil come to mind too, we say Cummin and Bazell rather than Coomin and Bayzill.
Oregano, Orreegarno vs Oregganno.
We argue with the poms (British) they have Pastees and Carsells whereas we say Parstees and Cassells (Pasties and Castles).
And doing USA based word games I have to concentrate when CENTRE/THEATRE etc aren't accepted, so much for a common language!

I can't explain this, but I have always spelled it "Theatre". Spell check gets me every time, so being the obedient sort that I am, I change it. I learned a lot my reading and spelling from comic books, even before I started school, so I suppose I might have picked it up there. I know that the "re" version is more visually appealing, at least to me.

When i was in middle school, vocabulary, my teacher was from Scotland. She "messed" up a whole slew of words spelling and pronunciation, which we dutifully learned. I've pretty much "corrected" the spelling, but still will pronounce a word a little different then is usual in the States here.

That makes me want to yell at the wife. She also says labtop. Went to college 6 years.

Oh - ..... I get this one all the time: "I tried to download this recipe but it says there's no paper in the printer."

Actually 'S-H-I-T' is an acronym for 'ship high in transit' !

-and there sure are a lot of '**** retentive' folks here. (AKA language police)

Or the ever popular Special High Intensity Training. Seems like I took a lot of that over the years. Maybe more than my lifetime allotment.
