Looking for ideas as this attachment is to big fo my tractor. Make it a towable backhoe? are they any good?

American Made, Kelly55
Kelley backhoe attachment in great shape. Pins are tight, Dug out drainage ditches in a farmer's field its whole life. The man was 76 and decided to let it go to me. The hoe operates as it should. Two of the cylinder leak. The dipper stick cylinder will need repacked. The swing cylinder leaks but someone may be able to manage with for a time.
Nice machine, Nice owner's manual which includes parts numbers and diagrams, see pics.
540 pto pump works great.
Comes with both sets of Cat I and Cat II pins. Upper 3rd point pin included.
18" inch Bucket. 18"wide, 24"long, 13"deep. in great shape
Digs 11' feet deep. See pic of specifications.
Bucket pryout power 5000lbs
Garaged its whole life except for the last six months. I even have the other red knob to the control arm so all four will match.
I research and found a good machine but no matter how badly I want It to go on my tractor, the truth is it's just too big for my old international 355. I hooked it up once and dug a little with it and realized it痴 the wrong size for me. Just want my money back out of it. My Tractor is 35 horse and powered it fine, It just needs a bigger tractor chassis to attach too.

Kelley is a good attachment, cant you make a subframe to attach to?

I cant. Its just to much for the tractor. im thinking im going to make it a stand alone unit. self powered with two wheels to push itself around. my buddy has a chevy s10 frame i can have. still has the rear axle on it.

the deal is i need to be digging in the ground not building a machine to dig in the ground. lol

Maybe the pickup frame and axles would work as a portable backhoe stand?
Maybe there need to be enough weight on the frame to equal the weight of a host tractor?
Maybe a dead engine block filled with concrete for weight?
Will have to be heavy enough to keep BH from flipping itself over
Sounds do able

Buy the BH you want/need !!
Sell the Kelly!
KISS principle!

Wiser words I don’t think ill hear, fried1765. I have listed it on craigslist in my area. but something primal in me wants that big hunk of machinery to work for me. I hear that voice,
"don’t give-up, it can be built " Its probably just a echo of a much loader cry heard at the turn of the century by great men like Henry Ford and such. I just hate to give up on it.
If it doesn’t sell I may move forward with a self powered trencher. I like the idea of it being separate from my tractor, FEL, boxblade ..ect.

The weight issues for it flipping over can better be solved with forward rigging attached to the outriggers. The truck frame ,axle, bed ( the guy threw the truck bed in too cause he wants to see it built. ) no front wheels, that’s where the hoe will sit. should be quit suited for a base and the mobility side of things. Of course the forward riggings down side is, the shovel bucket can hit it. But this is how nearly every towable backhoe is designed.
I have 22hp electric start lawn tractor to power the pto pump. it turn around 3000rpm. so will have to use pulleys to bring that down to 540. I get the torque gains, so that’s nice.
Should be about a 12 pack and a box of welding rods. LOL yea right.

I looked into many hoes years ago for our JD. Yeah, Kelly was one of the better.

It all depends what you are going to use a backhoe for. For me, reach is a huge issue. Like for loading a trailer and getting spoil piles out of the way. If you don't have reach, then, moving the hoe should be easy and not a chore.

If all you are doing is digging the odd hole for a bush, it's no big deal.
