I'm going to enjoy life to the fullest while I'm healthy and able, who knows what tomorrow will bring. You could save all your life and then when you retire die 2 weeks later, I have seen it way too often. It's a crap shoot, no one answer fits all that's what I have learned. Although I did just make the last payment on my tractor so I have that going for me.

Pop in the machine is $1.65.

The same pop at the store is frequently on sale for 4 six packs for $10.

That's .42 each.

You save $1.23 on each one you bring from home.

I drink 2 a day, so $2.46 per day saved.
$12.30 per week saved.
$639.60 per year saved.

Invest $639.60 per year in a mutual fund tied to the S&P 500.
Add $639.60 to it each year.
Apply the historical rate of return of 7%
Do that from age 18 to age 58 - 40 years.

Someone is going to remember that by saving your pop money, you left them $142,202.34.....

;)

Of course, no one takes their saved pop money and puts it in an investment account religiously.... or do they?

The point is, if you save just a couple bucks a day by taking pop from home, and if you save a couple bucks a day more by taking your lunch VS eating out, and if you would actually put that money aside, you could save a quarter of a million dollars towards your retirement, or you could make an extra mortgage payment every year and drastically cut time and interest payments off the end of your mortgage, or put the money in a 529 college savings plan for your kid, or a niece of nephew, etc.....

Someone's gonna remember you for that.

And if they don't, leave it to the cat or dog.
Unfortunately this doesn't apply to most who will read it, since they don't have pop. But if they convert this to a soda formula it does flow nicely. :D

I like to buy the 30 oz Powerades that are usually on sale for 99 cents. They are usually 80 or 88 cents at the grocery store. So I don稚 equate that to a winning proposition to buy them at the grocery store. But from the stores prospective I usually buy gas at their store because they have the cheapest Powerade in town.

You should switch to Coke. It's got 1/3 the salt, twice the carbs, twice the sugar, at half the cost.....

That's 8X more bang for your buck!

You're pancreas may beg to differ, though. ;)

I think it's a better strategy to make your cash flow for consumables less by $10 each month for soda and save it than try and scurry away saved pennies on each transaction. Take that $10 and invest it today and go back to that 8th wonder of the world phenomenon. Let the time value of money do it's thing.

Also, it's too expensive to be cheap. That comes with age and being burned on having to constantly replace cheap stuff. Sometimes it better to buy once and cry once than buying the same thing twice.

It's not like we're setting the money aside in a canning jar every day. If you make the conscious decision to bring your lunch and beverages, and make the conscious decision to put a set amount that you'll save towards another worthy goal, it's a no brainer. You'll also notice that cash in you wallet tends to go a lot further if you aren't feeding it into a machine a couple times a day, or handing it over and answering yes after you're asked if you want fries with that every day at lunch. ;)

We take leftovers for lunch almost every day, and I take a 6 pack of pop in about every 3 days. I never spend money at work on food and beverages. Once in a while we'll go out to lunch just because we like to. But for the most part, being frugal has lead to financial security for us.

Honest to goodness, when I was a kid, a friend of mine asked if I wanted a soda. My mind immediately pictured this mixed with water..... :p

He was from Boston... we straightened him out after many years.

Yep. I agree. But what's your plan if you accidentally live to 95?

Putting any health reasons aside the I’ll drink the Powerade after it’s gotten warm. Warm coke is terrible. And left in the seat of my truck the Powerade is good for weeks in the winter and a couple days in the summer. The coke is done for within hours.

I modeled my financial methods after a friend that was about 5 years older than me. When I got out of the service I noted that he would go to work with a packed lunch and a thermos. If you gave him $5 on Sunday, he probably had $4 left on Saturday. We talked one day and he said this: My lunch is good, I like coffee from the thermos, and I don稚 spend $8. For lunch. He said his money saves up fast and when it accumulates, he pays cash for what he wants. He said be patient. I have lived that way for a long time and it is comfortable after a short while.
I worked at an Army Lab, both as military enlisted and later as a civilian scientist. Early on I established the pattern of rarely going out or ordering lunch, even when on travel. Usually leftovers from home. Most of my coworkers saw lunch as a "needed" $5 or $10 expense. Just based on saving half of my lunch expense ($2.50/day) and 250 working days per year that is about $600/year and about $23K over my working career not counting interest. Or in real world physical terms it paid for about 25 acres of the last lot of land I bought in 2010.

You haven't lived until you've drank a warm coke and ate half a bag of radishes.

Or, I should say, you won't live if you drink a warm coke and eat a half a bag of radishes.
