Marijuana on the job

I have do doubt at all that there are pilots I would feel totally comfortable and safe with after they have had a lot to drink, and some totally sober that I would not be. People can become extremely tolerant of mind altering substances. Part of my annoyance with my own alcohol consumption. It just keeps going up and up. And even leaving it for six years, you go right back to the same level of tolerance, which surprised and annoyed me.

Just thinking about this a little more. Of all the people I know that smoked a lot of grass, and there are quite a few, not one ever had a motor vehicle accident. Now, it seems people figure, weed is legal and everyone is gonna start having wrecks! And we absolutely have to figure out a way to detect these drugs. I think, it's probably quite ridiculous.

I’m noticing that with a friend. He starts drinking early (self employed, no employees) and lately doesn’t stop until sloppy drunk and the beer is all gone. He’s tearing up more and more of his equipment that he is expecting me to fix for free. It’s time for one of the two to change, I dont mind helping anyone but when you start making it my job, we have a problem.

Ever see that WKRP episode where Johnny is volunteering for a test while on air over a few hours? OK, it's fiction and all, but ....

Insulin? BP meds? Nitro or other Heart meds?

Looking at it from the other side HIPAA penalties are quite severe... it is often a fine line.

I toured a BMW factory in Munich and was surprised to find Beer Vending Machines that dispensed at no cost.

A beer with lunch is expected... two beers??? three free beers and more than a red flag.

The collective bargaining agreement stipulates employer to provide complementary beer at meal break...

When I worked at a tool and die shop the owner would often have business lunches... always with a cocktail... but, alcohol on the shop floor not tolerated.

A friend of a friend has his dream job... works for a brewery and part of his job is Quality Control... paid to sample on the job... how about that?

At my last job, we had people that would go out to their cars on break, get smoked up, then come back in and really put a damper on production. They'd be standing at their station, the machine is throwing alarms that their station is empty of product, and they're standing there stacking their product, but not putting it into the machine. Just a blank stare. And if they remember to load their product, many times they'd load it backwards and jam the machine. Everyone else on the line gets pretty impatient with that crap when we have to stay late on what should have been an easy run.

So, no, if I had a production worker smoking pot on the job, or coming to work high, if it were within my power, I'd fire them. Same goes for being drunk. Do it at home. Do it at the bar and take a cab, uber or designated driver. Don't do it at work.

In the late 70s I was an apprentice electrician doing high rise construction mostly with a bunch of Italians. A case of beer was in order, during the summer, pretty much every day. We would sit under the highway trailer/office eating lunch. I would always try and get a few into me before time to get back to work.

People just never ask the right questions, maybe they are afraid of the answers. Why are so many people, so depressed, so sad, so anxious, so angry that they need to escape? And that certainly includes prescription drugs. And if not that, a myriad of addictive or obsessive behavior.

There is not a good test for mj, so accidents caused by it are not recorded.
In Ohio medical mj card does not override employer rules on drugs and alcohol.

Yea, not sure they can administer a breath test or swab on the spot.

No such test exists. Pot is legal (medical & "recreation") here now and the lack of a road side test is problematic. As far as I've heard there is only a blood test and that get's into the murky area of the ACLU, a murky outfit at best.
Right or wrong, we've all seen "functional" alcoholic, but there are many "functional" pot heads also. It's a toss up who I'd rather work next to but I think I'd take the stoner over a drunk, and either of them (if I'm driving) over an idiot texting.

Many years ago I was on a smaller pleasure cruiser on the Danube. Every morning the captain and crew started the day with a shot of Vodka followed by a mug of Beer. The only disruptions noted were tourists running into waiters carrying a full tray of food.
