Government is covered by a legal tenet known as Sovereign Immunity...meaning you can't sue the government. In those cases, you were forced to sue the individual, and unless he was acting out side of his authority, you were screwed. In this case, the law was changed by a court case and a statute which in effect waived the immunity. You can now sue the state, but it has to be in accordance with the state Tort Claims Act. The feds have something similar, as I suspect most states do now.

It might also be pertinent to add here, that there is a legal tenet called "Trespass of necessity"...which basically means that firefighters may legally do what ever it takes to tackle a fire, even if they run over your flower bed, newly seeded lawn or break the windows out of your illegally parked car.

My take is that too many keyboard jockeys are disrespecting first responders. I bet their tune would change if their house caught fire. There’s more morons here than in the OP’s photo.

If my house catches fire, I will block the driveway. I don't want a 3/4 burnt house.

The person who parked in front of the hydrant is a stupid *****.Most likely the same person who blocks the gas pump to run in to get a pack of ciggy butts or ride the fast lane on the highway doing 65 MPH in a 70 mph zone while folks pass them on the right.

Far too many people here are being far too judgmental of the drivers who parked by hydrants in these examples. There was surly some extenuating circumstances or third party to blame. You are only condemning drivers because you think they must be from another country,a liberial,non-christian,person of color,lead an alternate lifestyle or don't share all your values. What would you say if it were a young,white,colledge educated couple from middle America that stopped for dinner and drinks at the country club? :stirthepot:
