Yesterday I went to another local dealer, same franchise, and asked the salesman if I could start a 2025R or 1025R. We went out and I picked one. It's glow plug light came on for 5 seconds and started right up with just a puff of blue smoke and then smoothed right out like it should. Outside temp was 45 degrees. I picked a 1025R, since it's the same Yanmar Tier 4 engine, and the same thing. Pushing my luck, I picked another 1025R further down the line and the same thing. None of them looked like a mosquito fogger. The salesman asked why I was doing this and I explained that I didn't buy a mosquito fogger and showed him my video. He said mine was not normal. I told him my machine is at another dealer for repair and it's either waiting for parts or it's been sitting outside for a week just to piss me off and that it made no sense for me to keep calling them. He promised to call the other dealer and find out what they were doing.

So, after replying to you, I decided to do a cold start yesterday and not have my block heater on as it has been a long time since I did one in cold weather. I was wrong, mine did not smoke nearly as bad as yours does in your video. There is a puff but more similar to what you experienced with those other ones that you tried at the dealer. Well, I hope they find out if something is not right.

So, I just watched your video again. I noticed that your RPM's seem pretty high, do you throttle up to start or is that your normal idle?

I've put a few more hours on my 2025 since I lasted posted. Yesterday I started it and it didn't smoke nearly as bad as your video, but the temp was about 50 degrees. I'd say when it near or below 32 degrees it smokes about the same as your video. With mine the warmer it gets, the less it smokes. Mine idles at 1500 rpms, so I'd say that's normal.

Normal idle is 1575 rpm. Owner's Manual says set throttle at 1/2 to 3/4 and start it. That seems high to me so I set the throttle just off idle - 1700 rpm. After it smooths out, I throttle up to 2,000 rpm for a minute or so to get fluids warm.

I agree that around freezing, it smokes more. Mine is always in a garage at 45 degrees. Smokes like ****. I don't think 50 degrees is that much warmer. In the summer (I took delivery in June) it just gives a puff of smoke (I think black but don't remember - old age) at 70 degrees and up.

I used mine a little bit last night, it had been a few days since I started it. It seems like it smokes more the longer it sits. It was about 50 degrees out.

Mine do the same. It would be nice if the dealers let new tractor owners know what to expect.

After a week, the salesman called and said it's better. I asked what they found. He said they flushed the fuel system and emptied the fuel separator. I asked if they checked the glow plugs. He said the 1st thing they do is flush the system. I guess telling them it has 5 gallons of fresh Kwik-fill Diesel didn't sink into their skulls..... So, Step 1 of the JD troubleshooting chart was done. I wonder what step 2 is? Check glow plugs? Anyhow, the guy backed in the driveway, unstrapped it, and started it. At 38 degrees outside and only 20 minutes between starts, it smoked almost like the video. He gave me a page from the Service Advisor manual (OMLVU16742) titled "Cold Weather Starting Aids" that said "it is normal for blue-white smoke to be present during engine warm-up and is air temperature dependent". It also said to set the throttle lever to 1050 +/- 50 rpm. The 2025R idle is 1575 rpm so I don't know what this manual belongs to.
I started it the next morning and same thing. Nothing like the 2 1025Rs I started at the dealer. 1025R and 2025R have the same Yanmar 3TNV80F-NCJT engine. I don't know whether to keep at this or just give up.
This is a start today after a 24 hour rest. 48 degrees:

I know I have a different model than you do but mine idles at 1025 rpm. If your manual says for it to idle at 1050 +/- 50 that would make sense. Is there something wrong with your idle adjustment? Seems to me that you may be somewhat flooding it with fuel on start-up.
