I have a 2001 Ram 3500 with a dump body. It has the tried and true 360 in it. It has been a good truck too like you guys have. A little slow on the hills but I can afford the gas. It has paid for itself and gets the job done.

My little dump truck has a 6.5 diesel. Those motors catch a lot of hate but mine is mechanical injection pump and doesn’t have a pump control model and it’s been a dandy truck. If my new to me big dump truck is half that good I’d be happy. My big truck is a 366 gas burner and it needs a serious power boost. I don’t think the 200 hp diesels would do a lot better. I’d like a single axle truck in the 350-400 hp range. I don’t know how people survive without a 1 ton dump truck. My truck vs a regular pickup is like a tractor vs a tractor with a front end loader.

While I would love to have a ton dump not everyone makes a living with one as you do so it's hard to justify it. Some of us get by with one or two vehicles, so have to prioritize what is most important to spend the money on. While I could use for a ton dump and small dozer, with 7 ton trailer; my bank account dictates that my needs supersede my wants.

Is not that the truth . . .

I have under $50k in both my trucks trailer and backhoe. How many people drive some useless grocery getter with a higher sticker price?

I can't answer that question because I'm not one of them. I couldn't afford the fuel to run one of your trucks running back and forth to my mother's place several times per month; let alone the added insurance cost, registration fees, and higher repair bills which are inherent to a bigger truck. It also would be a real PITA running a logbook just to drive the 200 miles to her house.

I do . . . '06 Ram 3500 bought it new and it still is like that only with 140,000 on the motor . . . got to love the "cummins"

I did a lot of looking into diesels and the cummins is apparently the best. When the motor went in my ford, a great back yard mechanic said he could drop a 5.9 cummins in for $13000 out the door. I looked hard at that and talk to some of the guys whom he did that for. They were all very happy. Apparently this included some sort of adapter to hook up to the existing Ford transmission. No problems with any of it. A guy wanted my truck with bad motor and all and was willing to pay for it so I let it go.

No tractor but here is some locust I cut this weekend about three or four cords.

Nice wood! I wish I had some on my land, but there's not a single one. I occasionally get some at my mother-in-law's place though. Great firewood!

My little truck isn’t that bad. 20/30 cents a mile in fuel but deprecation has pretty much hit rock bottom. It’s probably still worth as much as when I got it 3 years ago. You could half your fuel bill ( probably not if you still have 6 wheels) but how much is the deprecation per mile on a newer truck? My little truck isn’t treated any different than a passenger truck. My heavier truck is technically not a CDL truck and there’s no log book required for it. I’m not 100% certain of the law but I don’t think commercial trucks with a CDL within 150 miles requires a log book. The big truck isn’t nearly as practical as the little one. I don’t care to drive around the ton but the 6500 better have work to do or it’s parked.
