Ford 1510 Won't start - any suggestions?

Hi Everyone,

I have a 1983 Ford 1510 (3 Cyl Diesel) that won't start after a long winter of not being used. It turns over a couple of times and then clicks. I took the battery in to get it tested (1 year old) and they said it was in great shape. The battery cable that connects to the positive terminal looks worn and has some strands of the cable that are cracked. I have two questions:

1. Is it possible that the battery is good but the cables aren't delivering enough juice to turn over the engine fast enough or hard enough to start? I have a 10 second video if that would help diagnose.
2. If no to number one, what should I look for next?

p.s. to date this tractor had one owner and had all scheduled maintenance done yearly. I have had it for two years and used it for less than 40 hours mowing.

Did they load test the battery or check voltage only?
If the battery is good, check the cables and all connecting points. A quick way to test is use jumper cables. Use the jumper cables to connect to the battery and to ground, then use the other one to the battery and go to the starter.
If that works, then you have to clean or replace cables. If not it could possibly be the starter solenoid or starter.
Try the cable test first then let us know.

if the engine can't crank fast enough to get enough compression, it won't start!..

They brought out a device about the size of a cinder block, connected it to the battery, and pushed a button that made the device start sounding like an engine turning over. While that was happening, they read a gauge that showed how many cranking amperes were being delivered by the battery. I'm not sure if that is a load test but it seemed to simulate the starting of an engine.

that still leaves the battery cables, and the starter as possible suspects.

the classic solenoid click when you get too low of a voltage at the starter..

Sounds like bad cables or connections.
Clean *ALL* connections and posts and make SURE all connections are TIGHT.

Let us know when this is done.

Needs for starting:

450 psig compression or greater at the 200 rpm rated cranking speed....and you need a power source to produce 200 rpm cranking speed for a minute or so...takes 200-300 amperes
Correct pump timing
fuel and ability to mist it into the cylinders
air for compression
