Wow, nice! I have a friend coming later this morning with his own homemade wiood splitter which has a crane as well. Might be able to take some photos of it, and certainly looking forward to seeing it in action!

I prefer a splitter with crane rather then log lift, I can reach 15'-ish in all directions, the only real issues is the remote cable, got to be careful with that, should have cable-less remote.

5 of us spent the whole day splitting and stacking wood with a friend’s home-made wood splitter.

Very cool crane on it, for lifting the big 36” rounds.

That's some big wood for sure. Looks like some big old pines. There is a lot of wood in them. You have a nice spot there.

I noticed a dying bitternut hickory behind our house and took it down last week. I don't normally drop trees this time of year due to ticks, bugs, snakes, and heat, but hickory is like gold for me since I smoke a lot of meat and fish. The outer parts of the tree were spalted with some bugs in the bark, so I carefully split out the heartwood into narrow pieces, cribbed it, and let it dry in the sun for a week. I'll break these splits down into 4" chunks and then put it all in rubbermaid containers for future use. Smells heavenly. The remaining spalted outer wood will make great firewood and netted about 1/4 cord.

Are you maken bacon with that butterd hickory, looks quite stringy and now your going to chunk it into 4", how you doing that, chop saw? and what size was it to begin with?

I havent cut a stick in over a month, the news said ticks are bad up here to, I'm not sure about that because the mud put a stop to me but it's drying fast, most likely the black flies will be out next week and that will put a stop to me to, for a couple more weeks.

Yeah, I'll probably put a bundle in my miter saw and chop the little pieces that way. In the past I would cut 4" thick cookies and then split those down, but I feel like it will be quicker to chop bundles of long skinny splits.

The tree was about 16" at the base. I was able to get normal size splits around the outside of each round, then saved the center heartwood for the BBQ wood.

That is exactly how I would do it.

Yup 5. Three splitters and two stackers. That round in the splitter in the photo is 36”, and we spent the weekend splitting an entire 75’ White Pine Tree. No State workers (nor, in our case, Provincial workers). All just friends/wives.

Sorry, I only took 1 photo, but is a completely home-made wood splitter (he has made 5 of them), and that crane works on a hydraulic cylinder that he simply pumps to lift the round. 15” tires, and a very fast ram!

Will take a pic of the woodpile later today.

Toothpick anybody?

Log 1.jpg

That's what went TO the mill. This is part of what came back:

Log 2.jpg

I had them leave the bark on so I could do a rustic edge on something if I want to. The shorter piece will be cut up for something where I want the grain pattern. This one is 8 foot, but I had a 10 footer done too. Kept all the scrap for firewood.
