The Vehicle Safety Inspection (or Not) Thread

No, I responded to your question.

You frame this in a way that seems to suggest an answer you want.

Texas and most states have multitudes of laws about vehicle safety. Any officer who sees an unsafe vehicle can take action on the violation as per the law.

Vehicle Safety Inspections as carried out in most states are a pure sham. They have nothing to do with performing a comprehensive safety inspection.

People who are responsible are going to keep their vehicles safe. Those who are irresponsible are not going to be deterred by the requirements it seems you would like to impose.

.
That's the first attempt by anybody to answer it.. and after the third time asking. I won't agree or disagree that mandatory inspections are a sham; yet at least once a year somebody is looking at them who knows something about mechanics. How does an LEO "observe" that somebody's rear brakes aren't working? Stopping somebody because they have a license plate out isn't for safety reasons; rather, it's an excuse to check for other things.

Once again, you didn稚 田ite any cases or accidents. You mentioned some anecdotes without any actual support for your unsubstantiated, self serving argumentative conclusions.

I would say that a frame failing, Brake lines pinched off because the wheel cylinder was leaking, or a kid's foot getting destroyed because it went through the rusty floorboards after the truck suddenly veered off the road is more than an anecdote. I will state further that if you don't see a problem with mounting tube type tires without a tube, I hope that somebody else does your mechanical work for you. "Self serving conclusions?" I was asking questions, trying to determine if those states without inspections had ways of addressing unsafe vehicles or if driving down your roads was just a crap shoot. Lastly. I posted quotes with corresponding links which indicate that there really is no way of knowing how many accidents are caused by mechanical failure because nobody tracks it; yet North Carolina is a state which implemented them because at the time there were, indeed a lot of accidents caused by unsafe vehicles.

You will note that I did not cherry pick links which supported what you purport to be my "unsubstantiated, self serving argumentative conclusions. " Rather, (unlike most posters who are merely posting what they think is right) I posted what I could find on the subject and tried to actually start some real dialogue. I find it ironic that I at least tried to posts to support my viewpoint, which you haven't done; yet you dismiss them out of hand.

It has been suggested you look at OVERALL accident rates for ALL the states and try to figure out if states with mandatory inspections have a better record.

You won't accept that as it doesn't include a category just for rusted frames and another for wheels falling off or whatever.

If you are really worried about your safety on the road, STAY OFF THE ROAD.
It has been PROVEN people get KILLED on our nations hiways.

Rather then require us to prove inspections don't solve whatever problem you fear, show us some proof that they do.

Interesting - apparently the dealership where I purchased the "Taco Wagon" is a state approved vehicle inspection station. I was digging thru the VOLUME of paperwork that comes with all new vehicles, yesterday. There was a single piece of paper stating that this vehicle meets all state vehicle inspection requirements. Really nice - since it was a brand new vehicle.

The dealership must have been covering all bases. Just in case somebody purchased this vehicle and happened to live within the city limits, where testing is required.

Also nice - no fees for "passing" the vehicle.

Why is it necessary to 'be right' or prove that someone else is not?

The real irony is that I don’t believe I have ever expressed an opinion on this subject. I merely asked a question, trying to find out how or if potentially unsafe vehicles are treated in states without mandatory safety inspections.

Usually see them for sale on a seedy little car lot or Facebook market place.

^^^
Up here we see them in people's back and side yards... right next to the last 2 vehicles they ran until the rust took them.

In recent years the Liberal Government of Ontario hired multitudes of inspectors to bully everyone from manufacturing concerns, auto mechanics (who were caught doing a bit of body work!) to hairdressers, doing color work and not having a color technician license. The fines and added cost of compliance is one thing, but the cost to pay all these additional cival servants is quite another.

You can't get money from the poor or homeless so you take it from the middle class. If they have a job or business, they can always afford a little more taxation.

It's sickening the way some people who don't produce or offer anything of value to society at the expense of everyone else, always attempt to justify their jobs.

Don't know what it is like in Ontario, but I have spent 4 months in each of the past 13 years in Nova Scotia.
I believe I read that one in five work for "the government".

And the other 4 of 5 just get paid by govt without doing any work?

For a while Florida had statewide safety inspections with state run inspection stations...there were almost always long lines and it was a real PITA to deal with...the majority of the employees were indignant and would not do anything to make it easier or let the tiniest crack in a tail light lens go etc...

Well...when Bob Graham (AKA Boob Graham) was elected he was working on a hobby car or maybe it was a pickup truck...at any rate he got so frustrated trying to get them to pass his vehicle (after repeated trips through the process) that he got the legislature to can the entire program and that ended inspections in FL...
However if you get cited for a moving or parking violation and there is bald tires, broken lights etc...they will add to a ticket...
