Light sticks are a great idea that never crossed my feeble mind. I have half a dozen led lanterns scattered around the house for extended outages. We also use automatic lights that illuminate when the power goes out. We use these to get to the lanterns and then turn them off.

With extended outages, we fire up the 2K watt Honda to run the well pump, heaters or freezers. Life or Diaster can be so simple, if prepared.

How much fuel do you keep on hand for your generator? Our coop has been very proactive about getting the trees away from the wires before the power goes out. In 15+ years it has never been off for more than a couple of hours. I've had their service since 1991 and it's only been out longer than that once in 1998... for 12 hours, when it was out in other parts of the state for weeks.
I only keep a 5 gallon can of non-ethanol around which I use for my rototiller and other small engines so that it doesn't get stale. In winter however, it would be more apt to go out so I also keep my snowsled topped off and can steal about 11 gallons from that.

I try to always have 10-20 gallons of gas stored in the barn for generator, 4-wheeler, sleds, snowblowers, chainsaws, etc. I do siphon out of the sleds on occasion. Seems as though our gas lasts for several years in storage but I seldom let it get that old.

I’m guessing thats a jab since more than half the stuff in your profile is HST. You must not get anything done besides working on junk equipment if HST is so bad.

Back when I had a well, I went the two incandescent bulbs in a "wye" fixture with one side on a photocell, then electricity was supplied through a thermostat. I used that rig for about 15 years with no problems other than checking on the bulbs once a month to make sure both were still working.

I used light bulbs in the pump house back in the day. Now I use heat trace with in a built in thermostat. No more bulb changing.

Around here our power goes out 4 or 5 times every winter, sometimes for days at a time. It does not take much, a 40 MPH wind will do it. Our trees are so profuse the power company can never keep up with them on all the roads that need to be maintained.

This week I am missing the Swamp Cooler from my youth. 89 degrees today and not a breath of air movement. Either I chase down the box fans from the attic or install my small window ac unit and hope it still works.

I'm not sure if this qualifies, but before I signed the paperwork on my mortgage and tractor loan I read the entire contract. The loan officer said that I was one of the few people who do.
