When I first bought my Kubota tractor, I wanted a place to store it out of the weather. Since it would be a year or so before I could build my new shop building, I needed to build something quick and inexpensive, so I decided to build a lean-to tractor shed off the back of my garage. The challenge for building this shed was getting the headroom and space I needed within space available.

The loader bucket is the widest part of my tractor at 5 and a half feet across. I found that I could set posts 11 feet from the back wall and comfortably have enough space on either side of the tractor. The 11-foot width allowed me to use 12-foot 2 x 6 roof rafters and have a decent overhang.

As for headroom, I wanted it tall enough so I wouldn稚 have to fold down my ROPS to get the tractor under the shed. The tractor is 91 inches tall with the ROPS up. The more clearance the better, but there was a trade between headroom and the length of the shed. The farther up the carport gable I went, the shorter the ledger board would have to be for the rafters attach to.

I have a video of how I designed and built it:

Also, attached are some pics showing some details of the build.

Simple and effective... should work well.

Thanks! It has indeed. Now I'm in the process of finishing the shop building where the tractor will live. I'll have a post on that project before long.

Good deal. Much like mine. However, I have a bunch of other stuff under the shed roof and my tractor gets parked in the pole barn that the shed roof is attached to. My brand new truck? It gets parked in the driveway. I need to rethink my priorities. Thing is, I drive the truck everyday and it's gone while I'm not home. The tractor is there all the time whether I am or not, so I believe that's why I leave it in the building to be better protected from theft and weather.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me, David.

"West Georgia" ????

If that is Southwest Georgia all would seem to be good.

If that is Northwest Georgia you could be in trouble with a heavy wet snow load.

That’s right. West Georgia. Not Northwest Georgia and not Southwest Georgia. Heavy snow is rare here, although the first winter after I built it we had 12” of snow. I raked the first 6” off but another 6” fell and the shed held up fine.

Looks good! I've had to play the tradeoff game with ledger height under eaves, roof pitch, and vertical clearance, and it's often a case where nothing is ideal but something works OK enough.

I'd like to build another lean-to off my barn, but with a roll-up garage door on this one. When I factor in the headroom needed for the door (even with low-headroom track) I'd have to go with a 2:12 roof pitch and it would just barely work. I generally prefer a minimum of 3:12. I'm still playing mental checkers with the design and all the tradeoffs....

That was my dilemma exactly. I had to go with a very shallow pitch on the roof but it has worked fine so far. My new shop building has a 3:12 roof, which not only looks nice but sheds water fast.

I’m doing the exact same thing.
I to have a slope down into the pad. Did you do anything special for water runoff like a French drain or stem wall in the outboard end?

Edit, after watching the video I see the details for drainage with the drain system.
