I think there is good basis for the judges reduction, independent of the unsettled question of how hazardous glysophate actually is. I mean, $2 billion dollars for two people who got cancer but are in remission? People who used a gallon a week and did not use protective measures? There has to be some balance of responsibility here. Seems like they (and their lawyers) should be pretty happy with $86 million.
heck, U.S. soldiers in Vietnam used Agent Orange to bath with, sometimes people do stupid things!..

Until reading your post I had never heard of anybody bathing in it.
I took an herbicide course in 1987. Even then the professor claimed that all Agent Orange ever caused was acne. I worked with forestry and R/W herbicides for a while, the comments and viewpoints of some of the people I worked for have made me skeptical of anything which that industry claims. Look at how long it took Phillip-Morse to admit that smoking cigarettes may be hazardous to your health.

With everything in the world, natural & man made, causing cancer, how can they point to one thing and say IT is what caused THIS cancer?
And ir it did, why didn't it cause cancer in everyone else that used it?

Not even taking into consideration $2 BILLION for any settlement.
Those people will/would never come close to making that much in their lives.
Nobodies pain & suffering is worth that much.

My personal opinion is that heredity causes most ailments including Cancer. When 100,000 people are exposed to something daily and only 1,000 or so develop a disease, can we really draw a conclusion? When some people are ill most of their lives, contracting one disease after another while others are rarely sick at all, where does that lead us in the causation game?

the age old argument of genetics vs environment. so...back to the question.

do you regard the herbicide safe in terms of contact & possible ingestion? for example, would you consume fish from a pond w/run off containing glyphosphate from a treated area even if minimal?
not trying to make an argument, just looking for opinions on a product we use every day. it sure is easier to spray it rather than weed eat for example. tempting, but even in my 70's i'll never do it.

whatever the consensus, you have to admit it is as American as apple pie & fireworks on the 4th. & worthy of a health issue discussion.
thx for the various replies & best regards

Farmers have been using this & other chemicals since they were discovered.
I am old enough to remember when people died of "old age" and I KNOW a lot of farmers & families are dying of other things then these cancers.
Also consider how many city dwellers get & die from the same cancers without ever coming in contact with it.

Sometimes....... people post stupid comments too!

From my limited reading it seems to me that the people in these court cases did not follow even basic safety measures for working with chemicals.
Also seems to me that is there was a serous issue with the product that lots prettier percentage of people would be having problems.
Is it safe ? I do not know. Does seem to be pretty low risk with proper care.

Is it safe - how should I know. All the "scientific reports" I've read are biased one way or the other. They both can't be right.

In the most general terms - too much of most anything is not good for your health.

You want to get rid of cattails? Cut them off below the water level. They smother.
