I have never seen any hot and spicy fried chicken at KFC. Popeyes used to have good spicy chicken or your choice of regular until Copeland lost control of the company, then they switched to smaller pieces of chicken and less spices and it is not edible anymore. Church's hot and spicy chicken is still large pieces that are really spicy and good. Locally, we have a convenience store chain named Brothers that has the best fried chicken around. It is good but not as spicy as it used to be probably because of the increase in the price of the spices.

No matter where you get the chicken, I don't consider it worth eating unless it was fried less than 10 minutes ago.

But that can be said about most of the opinions expressed here. Lots of regional favorites that don't travel well if you weren't raised with them. Most southern dishes fall in that category for me. Rocky mountain oysters, brain sandwiches, poutine, and Moxie aren't exactly mainstream items either (I do like Moxie, the other stuff not so much).
If something tastes good I could not care less where it is from originally especially when referring to something like fresh seafood...I base my tastes on flavor, texture and freshness not because they are from a specific geographic region or temperate zone.

My reply was not referring to regional recipes/dishes etc...it was mostly referring to seafood and the waters it comes from...organ meat is another topic entirely there are many different regional recipes for such...

IMO writing off an entire selection of seafood (fin fish, shellfish etc.) solely because it comes from warmer waters is ludicrous at best and really ignorant at worst...and in the case of the post I was replying to the poster was writing off a huge percentage of the worlds fishery and comparing/rating it to a very tiny market share with minimal products (if Alaska is removed from the equation)...

I was listening to a talk show host on XM Patriot Radio Yesterday. He made a really good point about the trend of bashing fast food and prepared food, pointing out that these companies fed and hence built the nation you know today. Interesting perspective and argument.

Reminds me of our first trip to Memphis. We happened upon a Popeye's Chicken place (unknown in Oklahoma at the time), so I bought some. We had no idea it was spicy, until we got back to the hotel and one of the kids said "Dad, this chicken is hot!". I thought they meant hot from cooking, and I couldn't imagine how that could be since it had been at least a half hour since we bought it. We were surprised, and ultimately decided it was good.

I would like to know what he based that opinion on. Just because he said it doesn’t make it true.

Is fast food a useful label these days. All of our favorite sit down restaurants have a thriving take out business as well. All the mainstream grocery stores have salad bars, delicatessens, roast chickens.

When my wife was working in Washington DC and I was living in coastal Virginia, we used to rendezvous for weekends in Fredericksburg. Stay at a nice hotel and eat out. The Wegman's grocery store had the most amazing setup, a cross between a salad bar and a cafeteria, about 50 different things to eat every evening. We found many things to like there and that is about as fast as it can get.

On the other hand when I got to California I realized I had not eaten at a "traditional" fast food place (like Wendy's) in decades. And they are all over the place. So I tried out about 8 of them over several weeks. Answer, sure wish there was a Wegman's in Sacramento.

A long day on the road yesterday. First fed by the King of Hamburgers and Later in the day by Dominos. When the Lady friend is not around and I have work to to, Swansons Feeds me. No time to messa bout in the kitchen. I'd say Tim Hortons (Coffee) just about runs this Province. Not sure about the others.

El Pollo Loco... Amazing chicken and great sides... Do you not have one there?

Yes several. Have thought about giving it a try. Did not make my 8-place trials where I was checking out the old standards.

But we have a topnotch restaurant nearby that has both a Peruvian and a Mexican menu. It is outstanding and always ends up as the place we go to for that kind of food. It does sit down, take out, and catering all at warp speed!

I like Vietnamese, I suppose it is fast food as it is always fresh and ready in a few minutes, unlike Chinese they don't seem to rely on sauces etc, just a lot of fresh vegetable.
Unlike 'fast food" it is not pre cooked or prepared, has no added sugar or flavour enhancers, preservatives but when they add chilli it can be brutal.
Had a chicken curry last night, made it from scratch the day before, down side is that it purges the soul, literally, and burns.
