Any local mechanic should be able to install a switch. The question is how are you going to keep the tractor safe from theft is the POS comes back??

Sorry this happened!!

I know who it was so hopefully local sheriff will convince him to stay away. I'm considering getting a game cam to keep where I normally park it.

Just an FYI.. there are different switches for gas & diesel tractors.. BE SURE to get the correct one.. or some components wont work.
Its just a matter of swapping wires.. they push on & pull off {most of them}
AND the switch is marked/ abbreviated on the underside..
IF your not confident in your skills, get a neighbor to help & pay'm 50.00.
Sorry to here about your trouble..

Thanks for that bit of info. I've been trying to find info on how to remove the existing ignition key module from the tractor but haven't found that tidbit as yet. If I can find that I'll know much better how confident I am or am not. I live in a remote location in the mountains so it's not easy to get someone to come out to my place to do repairs without costing quite a bit just to get them here. If it's the one posted in the Ebay link here, once I get the damaged one out it would look to be a simple switch at that point.

I have 4glte game cams and a plotwatcher keeping me informed.

I've replaced the ignition switch on my Kubota, I suspect your JD will work the same way. There is a cover that screws onto the key switch, Get a large pair of pliers and some soft rubber (or equivalent) for padding the jaws so you don't scratch the cover and unscrew the cover. Once the cover is off, the switch can be pushed thru the console and drop out the bottom. Unplug the connector and plug in the new one. Reverse the process to complete the replacement.

I couldn't find a picture on the web, so I'll get one later today to show what I'm trying to describe.

Don't you have a mechanic or handyman in your community? Replacing an ignition switch + key is a common job. Any handyman mechanic can simply use the serial number of the JD790 to order the part and then either you or he can install it. I'm betting it won't take but an hour to do it right.
Again, this is a common job for any mechanic to do. It is even easier because those old JD790s are way easier than the complex ignition systems found on newer tractors.

In fact, I just looked on Ebay under "JD790 ignition switch". There are several sellers for under $30. The problem is to get one that is identical to yours. Check by tractor serial number. Frankly, I'd probably buy from a regular John Deere dealer who sells parts online. Just call any JD parts dept. Order with a credit card. With the switch in hand, it will be obvious how to replace the old one.
good luck, you can do this...

If this is the ignition switch it should be an easy swap out if you have a friend that is handy.

The ebay switch is the correct P/N AM876787. List price is $30. You might want to see if a local dealer will mail it to you first class mail.

Install is simple. Screw off the front retaining ring and remove from the back. Wiring will be connectors that just unplug. Plug the new ones connectors to the wiring harness, install from the back, install front retaining ring.

I've replaced ignition switches on other vehicles, it's as easy as @zebrafive describes. The hardest part might be getting to the back side of the dash. That should just involve disassembling the dash until you have enough access.

Loosen the ring on the old switch before you take the dash apart.

I had a 770 Great tractor.

Sorry, but not a great fan of letting your average mechanic touch anything electrical. Ugly crimp connectors and electrical tape. Just for starters, have you priced the switch from JD?
