Hi, sounds like we think along the same lines, I was at an auction and got a pretty good deal on a Subaru engine new in the box that I'm hoping I could pop on if need be! Not that I expect it to last like the Honda but I have no experience with those!
Thanks!

Well I bet you do not dig the gave for that GX270 anytime soon if you keep changing the oil and give it a go. Subarus are good engines but they are not a GX. I think Subaru has the two lines as well, good and better.

My thing is how much work is too much on the old one. Just in the last week it has started not idling as nice as it sputters and stinks while it does that! Maybe I'll still end up throwing a new carb on. After these hrs I wonder if the butterfly shaft might have substantial wear? Or might it not be idling nice because the compression is dropping too low?

But I would like to see if I can't get to 9999.9hrs yet and have the hour meter go back to 0000.0!

Stop it at 0000.0 and sell it as new

Just an update, I finally solved the idling problem! Pulled out the idle jet and it had a few crumbs in it! Runs like new again!

Your compression leak down may be the result of valves and not cylinder wear. Try a wet comp test. A valve job may restore compression and new engine performance.

While not a Honda, my BMW motorcycle engine is air cooled, 19 years old and has factory compression. Most BMW oilhead, boxer powered motorcycle owners use Mobil1 15w-50 engine oil with excellent results. There is one fellow who has one with over 600,000 miles on his with no engine teardown. Synthetic engine oil in air cooled engines is almost a must. It resists heat and shear better than non-synthetic or synth blends. Check the NOACK scores...synthetics win every time.

Hi, I'm wondering what people have experienced in engine life on air cooled gas 9 to 13hp engines? I have one that's used everyday in a moderate demand application and have tried to be somewhat diligent with oil changes every 100 hrs on Syn blend oil or up to 200-300 hrs on full Syn. As has been mentioned oil in general doesn't cause internal damage but rather the lack of it or degraded oil that causes failures. But this puts up the question, how long can I really expect to go?

I didn't go very long at all with a 13 horse. In fact about 25 hours and it tossed a rod and the local lawnmower shop (Honda certified) told me it was my fault and denied my repair claim so I said heck with it and bought a Pred. The Pred has been running like a top for 4 years now on a pressure washer I use to washdown farm equipment. No more Honda junk for me. My 13 horse with a hole in the case got landfilled.

Honda GX engines are top notch, treated right they will run for a LONG, LONG time. Commercial grade and they have earned it.

I’ve got a Honda knockoff (lifan) on my wood splitter. When I bought it I had the option to upgrade to a Honda but I declined. It’s been the one thing on the splitter that’s not a POS and it’s ran like a top. I have a running Honda GX 15 hp that I bought for $15 to go on it when it’s day comes but it’s looking like that’ll never happen.

Sorry, but I call bull on that story.
