Easiest method to fill with diesel

/ Easiest method to fill with diesel #2
Thanks, Drew. But, crappy video. Requires an accurate and fast reacting fuel gauge (mine is neither). No way to turn fuel off in emergency or on overflow. I don't like the thought of a soft fuel hose under my truck where anything could rip it apart.

I'll stick with cans until I can afford a transfer tank with pump. :2cents:

Thanks for posting your comments. That’s a nicer version of my opinion.

This assumes everyone wants to put "T" fittings in their fuel lines and by the way my truck is "gasoline"....Also you need remote (dead man switch) to start and stop pump.... What if line comes out of tank, you are going to squirt diesel all over everything before you get line back into tank, or run to cab to turn key off....

Also prefer "red" diesel so I don't play the 75¢ (or so) a gallon road tax Calif charges on diesel...

I overfilled my previous tractor once or twice using cans, then an electric pump with hose. For the past 10+ years now I use a dedicated transfer tank with electric pump and auto shutoff nozzle.

There are better ways.

I have about $150 invested in my diesel fuel system but do not have an auto shutoff nozzle. Not needed in my situation as I can see/hear the level as it reaches full. It is a 50 gal reefer tank mounted on a wooden frame that I can lift on and off the truck. I can use off road diesel and save $.50/gal. It uses a cheap 12v transfer pump rated for diesel.

I use this little pump for my gas powered stuff. It works very well and it has auto shutoff. Works with gas and diesel. If I was younger, it is what I would use but I do not like lugging 5 gal containers of diesel around. I use more diesel than gas. The only downside is you need spare batteries but I have used it all year and still on the original set. It is slower than the 12v system but still better than using fuel cans with spouts. I hate those things!!!!

I am looking for something to replace gas cans so your post interested me. I read the reviews and decided not to risk it. Many people were not happy with their unit. You must have received one of the good ones!!

I've been pretty happy with mine - although it is not "exactly" the one I linked in the last post. I found mine on Ebay a few years back. It's small enough to manipulate down ramps from the bed of my truck when full. It beats the heck out of using 5gal cans with spouts. These things can run from the $200 range to much higher. I see no real difference in them except getting ripped off :)

At $200 I thought ... so what ... it can't be any worse than what I had before.

Edited to add: I think this is way overkill for regular lawn equipment. I only use this for the tractor to eliminate having to lift/slosh/spill the diesel.

I built my own tank to fit in a full size pickup truck. Deliberately kept it lower than the cab’s rear window for driver visibility.

When I bought my first tractor, I went ahead and bit the bullet. Got a 100 gallon steel tank and 15 GPM 12 volt pump (both used) for $350. Been using it for 10 years now without a problem other than the auto cut-off nozzle started tripping off and hard to get started, so I replaced that. No issues with the pump. After a couple of year of using a jump start battery pack, I bought a small car battery that I keep attached to the pump with a battery maintainer hooked up. Same battery now for 8 years and still going strong. It just doesn't get any easier than pulling up to the shop, flipping on the pump and filling the tank.
I initially got the 12v thinking I might need to put it in my truck but that has never happened. I get fuel delivered in bulk right to my door. I did have to get an additional tank after the bulk sales guy upped the required purchase amount to 150 gallons or else I had to pay a delivery charge. I just got a free TOTE TANK from a local chemical company and use that to make up the required amount to deliver.

Wow. A lot of overkill posted here. I set a 5 gallon can of diesel on the tractor hood and use a giggle siphon to transfer the diesel from the can into the tractor. Super fast and no expensive pumps

Let me guess....you are under 70 and/or do not have rotator cuff issues? Does your wife/GF ever fill your tractor or pick up fuel in those jugs?

I like having a 50 gallon tank that I can easily put in my truck bed with forks and fill with off road. I store it in the garage on two HF dollies and it takes less room than a bunch of jugs. I have $150 into my setup (tank, 12V pump, wood frame, dollies). If it lasts 15 years, that is $10/year.

No loose jugs in the back of the truck. No spilled fuel.

And my fiancé can easily fill the storage tank, off load it, and fuel the tractor. That has value to me at least.

Overkill is a relative term. I go by the "work smarter, not harder" principle.
For me, a truck mounted 12v commercial transfer pump with auto shutoff nozzle is the method of choice. Zero lifting, zero spilling / over filling.

This year, the card that my daughter gave me for Fathers Day included a 4" x 6" magnetic sign,,

The sign says
"No job is too small for a BIG expensive power tool,,,"

That saying applies to me fueling the tractors,,, :D

I think the amount of fuel used makes a lot of difference.

I use 2,500 gallons per year. That's 500 five gallon jugs.

I have a transfer tank mounted in my truck. Rarely touch a 5 gallon jug.
