As someone who's lived most of his life in New England I couldn't agree with you more. I remember when we were kids my parents gave some of our home made maple syrup to some city relatives. They didn't like it at all. Didn't taste right. I guess they were so used to Aunt Jemima, etc. corn syrup that they couldn't appreciate the real thing.

Don't think I've seen this mythconception mentioned yet, in the fall when the teachers' unions go on strike they're doing it "for the kids". Yeah, right.
A few things which I refuse to buy are potatoes, eggs, garlic, and maple syrup.... I can raise them of as good if not better quality, and will go without if I don't have any on hand. One day I was at the company camp and a coworker had some fancy organic eggs in the fridge. I broke a couple of them into the pan... and promptly threw them out because of the pale, runny yokes. Yet I've given fresh eggs to people, who tossed them because "the yokes are too yellow."

My grandkids are city kids. But they absolutely turned up there nose, through a fit, and refused to eat their mommas pancakes and syrup  pancakes weren't light and fluffy like Pappies, and the syrup tasted funny.

They get homemade buttermilk pancakes with pure maple syrup from a known source. We get our syrup by the gallon from either a friend in New York, or another friend in Vermont. And it's always the cooking grade since I like the stronger flavor. The kids will turn their noses up to fancy grade syrup since it has a weaker maple flavor :D

Daughter in law through a fit with me due to the price of the syrup in the stores. I told her that the next time she's over to the house to remind me and I would give her the pancake recipe and send some syrup home with her. Usually all I pay for is shipping :cool2:

I think it was the first visit I made to "the family" in NJ after I started dating she who is now my wife, I brought a gallon of Maple Syrup. It was "accepted" kind of in the vein of which you "accept" those "gifts" from your cat after a night of prowling. "Good kitty! (where do I put this thing)"...

And for several years after we got married (5 months after proposal, so I don't thing the syrup turned her off too much!) Aunt Jemima was the preferred sweetener of pancakes, waffles and French Toast at our house. Eventually (it DID take less than the 32 years we've now bin hitched) my wife became as strong proponent as I for the real thing. She even checks with her one Aunt (in NJ) every time we head south to see if she wants (needs) some more VT Maple Syrup. All the more reassuring since that aunt is from Canada...!

I splurged on maple syrup when younger but then had some obvious fake syrup mold. This turned me off for a very long time. Real maple syrup is on par with Real olive oil...usually fake, these days. Same with honey.

All I got was a keyring for $20k, hat was another $15 and I refused to pay for one as I probably wouldn't wear it anyway.

I don't blame you for that. Even if I wore a hat, I refuse on principal to pay to promote somebody's business.

I support their business by buying their product. If they also want me to advertise by wearing their apparel, it had better be free.

If my Dad was offered a hat with his purchase, I have no doubt, he would decline but ask that five dollars or whatever be taken off his bill.

$36K for a cap and a 'spiffy' bomber jacket!

Oh, and the TBN ballcap and coffee mug are not a myth!
