She bought a new oil boiler to replace her old one. They only turned the old water heater on when it was needed. I'm the one who heats water on the wood stove, I'm too cheap to run a water heater in winter when I can just put it on the wood stove.

Your a hard core Mainer from the ole days.........

Back down we go to check the furnace. Sure enough, high concentrations of gas are inside the furnace. It turned out the flex line coupler had only been hand tightened to the incoming gas line. Once that was tightened, all signs of gas were gone.

Now I need to go back through 2 to 3 years of gas usage to try to determine how much gas leakage there was and does that explain all of the $200 increase or do I need to check further. And of course, once I have all that I will have a discussion with the furnace installer.
WOW you are lucky you didn't wake-up out in the back yard half way up a tree...............This is one good reason no NG for me, hardly a month goes by where I here about a house blowing up, think it was just last year in Mass where whole neighborhood blew up...........But never heard of a house blown up from oil or electric heat.
Natural gas believe to be cause of Des Moines house explosion

This is one near where my sister lives. 39 homes across several towns blew up or caught on fire in the space of a couple hours. She has NG. The gas was shut off for months after. Scary stuff.

Picked up the last of the little wood I had laying in the woods today.

I think that's one of the NG storys I heard about. That's some good yellow birch firewood, bet you wish you had one of those trailers with a log log loader.

I cant remember who posted the cost of heating with firewood list a couple years ago, I think he said it's a list from the 70s but still funny and probably true in someways, so in case there are some here that forgot the cost, here it is again...........

But the heat is better and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Most of us here burn to save money but if you truly figure it out it is not much of a savings. But the heat is better and most like not depending on the utilities.

My splitter and wood burner is the only stuff I own that I wouldn’t have if I wasn’t burning wood. I’d still have my saws, equipment and dump truck.

Don't get me wrong. I burn wood, but how is that "HEAT" nicer? I do know, when you get up in the middle of the night and the stove door touches your naked arm, it's nots so nice a!

I don’t think anyone pays to turn the thermostat past barley tolerable where they toss in all the wood they want

My family sure thinks it is. Our fireplace is pretty large with glass doors. There is nothing better than relaxing on a cold day with the radiant heat the unit puts off. With geo there is not much savings to burning wood especially when factoring time, just something we enjoy.

Agree totally on the visual value of fire on humans. But people keep talking bout the "HEAT" specifically. Nicer? the dust, ashes and dirt? Sorry, that isn't about the heat either.

I like to burn wood, but a central heating system in this house, would be "NICE" without the 500 degrees at the stove and cold areas in other rooms and places.
