From what I've read, when someone threatens a LEO with a deadly weapon, they tend to respond with a deadly weapon. It sounds like they tried to do him a favor, and it didn't quite work out.

Regardless of what led up to it, the police showed up and said something like, "Drop the knife!" At that point, he had a decision to make, and he did not choose wisely. I think it comes down to personal responsibility.

Unfortunately the guy he was arguing with was not a better marksman.

I don't know where you are getting your information, but the man was 29 years old. At some point, it's time to stop blaming Mommy.
