I read it. Not only was it not the best idea, it was the worse idea.

Don't have any idea of cost but a steam weeder is supposed to work better than open flame. I have used the flame type it worked well. we pulled a 500 gal tank of propane behind the tractor, while I walked 120 acres. It did kill the cockelburs. It also killed the locust trees and any other weed or tree that I hit. I was a lot of work. I still use a dragon torch on my driveway when the grass burrs get too thick.

NS gearhead have you made any progress on this project?

I have a shallow well and a 600ft driveway i use a hand burner on. It takes for ever. Poison is not an option.

Does anyone read the thread before posting? I feel like I'm having to repeat myself a lot.
Yes, people do read the post, and Yes you are having to repeat yourself, because using the flame is so different from what all of us are used to. The response of herbicide is what all of us are used to and is more cost effective, easier, etc. So, first we have to change gears and that takes a little bit to rethink a solution for you. So, yes, you'll need to be patient with us, but we'll try to get you an answer.

I thought you originally were after a burner for weed control between plants in a row crop situation since that's the only place I've seen flaming used. So, now that you mentioned a gravel drive I'll have to rethink that. I do believe that you could get a pipe, drill holes in it for propane jets and use that instead of the monster burners. All you need to do is damage the cells in the plant not turn it into crispy ash. Speed control will be important to control the amount of heat applied to a given area to accomplish what you need. Age of the plant is the other factor, young, tender plants are easier to control.

would a weed burner also kill weed seed?

BIL uses tractor mounted burners for killing emerging weeds prior to the crops sprouting. Has to be timed right to work right. They use it for organic farming.
Also has some risks, had one malfunction a few years ago, destroyed the back end of a JD ag tractor. I think they used the engine for an irrigation pump.
