Got some more logs to slice up and I need somewhere to stack the lumber so it was skid building time...

Get it lined up on the floor

No one here would call them flitches either, they are slabs... Flitches are a plank of wood with the bark edges still on it.

I heat with all of my slab wood, one winter that's all I burned
I am sure this varies by species but out here in the old timer days they saved the thick Douglas Fir bark (often 3 inches thick) for the blacksmiths to use. It burns HOT. Lots of BTUs.

Yes but your mill is not in a building........... My building floor is up 20-24", then the mill bed is up 20"-ish, so the wood deck has to match mill bed. When I first got mill the first thing we built is building for it, just dont like a mill out side to the weather, one benefit is I can saw on a rainy day. On big logs where my tractor is on the small side I have to add poles at a 45* angle on the end of deck to roll logs up.

My log deck matches my mill bed also, it looks like you stack your logs up on your log deck a couple high instead of a single level, that's what I was talking about.

I wouldn't be able to get that log off the ground. Now if the boards will stay nice and flat after they're dry, that would be nice.

Sherlock here says these pictures was not taken during summer, no crime I can see, your free to post more pictures............

I agree, I could not pick that log up either.. MAN that's some nice looking wood!!

Not that hard to do and it sure makes it easier to deal with lumber coming off the mill, I stack and sticker it as it comes off, when its as much as I can pick up with my tractor I strap it all down and move it somewhere to dry.

Seems I spend half my time building skids and cutting stickers..

Oh ok gotcha, yes when I was rebuilding my garage I always had a good size pile on deck, not so much now. When the front of the deck got down I push the logs in closer with tractor, and that is one reason why when mill is at idle and or not in use, the saw-head is brought back, the back log stops are up, last but not least the swing arms are swung out to the mill bed. If these procedures are not followed, the logs when loaded will roll off deck and on the floor and or if the back stops are not u,p the log will roll across the swing arms, across the mill bed then on the floor, cedar not so bad, hemlock will burn my biscuit.
