I saw the stake pocket video last night - Thanks and pretty clever. Seems to be gone now or maybe I was dreaming ?? Must be you have a patent in mind. :)

gg

You mean this one right>>>>> Unloading sawmill slabs off trailer. - YouTube <<<I re-labeled it so I can find it easier but still should be able to watch it, no copy rights or patents on anything I do. You probably already figure out the reason for swing out stake pockets by watching the previous video, so if one can afford a trailer with pulp loader swing out stake pocket aren't needed.

And your previous comment on skip saw chain I thought those were made for chainsaw sawmills yes no? For cutting sawmill slab bundles like I do I think regular chain works good, but I would like to try out the Jon 2171 on a 30" tree sometime just to if it really does have the power. I'm quite sure a 30" in log is different then sawmill slabs, but that test cant be done on any trees I have yet, I'd have wait another 50 years, you can check back with me then.........

Trying to understand. What is the advantage of stake pockets that open up?

When I load the trailer with slabs my FEL cant lift high enough to get the top bundles back off in my forks and theres no way anyone can pull out stake pockets under pressure, but with a quick release lever the weight of the slabs push the stakes out then I can easily get at the slab bundles.

Also when I have loaded logs on trailer I can drive up close to trailer, hold logs with FEL, then take a longer stick and hit the levers, back tractor away and then some of logs roll on to the stakes on the ground for easier log handling with FEL. For people with big tractors swing out stake pockets aren't needed.

I found the stake video again. Just operator error.

They make skip chain for Alaska/ripping mills but also for regular cross cutting. Your slabs cut pretty well I thought. Probably because it wasn't solid wood. You had a lot of edges and voids in there. Here is the best explanation I have found on skip chain advantage from an Arborist site:

"The primary advantage to semi or full skip is when cutting larger logs. The wood chips are carried out between the cutter teeth and having more room for those chips in a larger log allows the teeth to continue cutting until they exit the log and dump the chips.

When the gap between teeth fill up the tooth really can't do much more but vibrate and rattle. On smaller stuff regular chain will work better because the teeth exit and dump often enough not to need the extra spacing."

A couple other advantages are less teeth to sharpen on long bars and less drag when using a bar that is to long for the power of the saw. I had a guy I worked with who liked a Husky 359 with a 3/8 .058 gauge skip chain on a 24" bar. He thought it was lighter and handled better that a bigger saw with a full chain on a 24" bar. Now a days with the small kirf chains and better power to weight ratios there are more options.

Can you do a another close-up of your latch mechanism? I can't quite make out what you did there (not sure if it's your photo or my eyes that are causing the problem.)

The latch is shown perfectly in the video,,, and it is in action, closeup!!

Apparently, I watched the wrong video originally. I just saw one that showed releasing the stake pockets, and did not have much of a close-up.

Never discount someone taking the "Oldpath" . . .;)

Not very exciting. Wood shed at the cabin was getting low. On the hunt for some birch for next year and some standing dead spruce for this year. Not really that far ahead, but don't burn more than a cord through a typical winter.

Start watching at one minute, 45 seconds to see the closeups,,,
