Same reason why the thermal efficiency of a oil, gas or coal power plant needs a lot of tech, extra equipment and expensive alloys to exceed 50% thermal efficiency .
If more research and discovering new materials solves everything . Why hasn’t the Rankin cycle steam engine that’s been around in various forms since 1698 have 95% efficiency ?

Cancer comes in many forms. We have developed very few cures for anything . Most medicines treat symptoms, they don’t cure.
