Just bought a 1010 tractor and I am trying to get it started. Checked out the battery and it seems to be positive ground. Just want to be sure that is correct and how to go about jumping it from a negative ground vehicle. Also has anyone converted a 1010 to electronic ignition and what all is involved. Was it worth the expense and the trouble to install. Thanks

Connect your cables positive to positive, negative to negative just as you usually would. The only important caution is that you MUST NOT let the vehicles touch.

Ahh... did you mean to say that you must not let the cables touch?

Rick B said it correctly! Don't let the vehicles touch. It will be a short circuit.

OK... I re-read the OP.

I just could not imagine 'butting up' one vehicle to the other in order to hook up the jumper cables.

It is a gas tractor. I was thinking about converting to electronic ignition to do away with points and condenser. Can I convert it to negative ground at the same time. I am just about sure it has the original generator on it. Would I have to convert to an alternator and would the voltage regulator still be needed. I am looking for a source for the electronic ignition control. Thanks for any help and advice.

I was warned way back in the 60's-80's when I was employed by JD dealer not to let vehicles touch when jumping off tractors more especially the tractors with 24 volt systems.

It's a lot of expense and trouble to convert to alternator and negative ground. If your generator is working, I would leave it as is. It's a solid design - nothing wrong with the factory design, and changing/setting points every few years isn't that much work.
