I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don’t want to know. I like to think they were singing about something so beautiful it can’t be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it.

- Red (Morgan Freeman) Shawshank Redemption
Great movie... one of my favorites. What a great duo. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.

A decades old, great quote from my mom and other moms trying to convince their young boys to be more social or better behaved. When they broke something or did something stupid, you could count on:

"That's why we can't have nice things".

I have been watching lots of Mennonite and Hutterite documentaries. Certain Mennonites can't have shirt pockets because you could put something "NICE" in there.

Around here there are some Amish that use small pieces of a twig for a button. Maybe the button is too ornamental?

I once remember hearing that certain Mennonites were imprisoned for not reporting for military service and they tried to bite the buttons off their prison uniforms. Funny how easily the human brain can be programmed.

Mennonites that I know could opt for "alternative service" since at least the 1970's and many around here wound up in medical care or service things. I don't recall ever hearing of an old order Amish having anything to do with the service. They just won't do some things and don't care what happens. I don't think you could ever convince one otherwise.

Part of wife’s family is Mennonite. Some live in Canada. Huge variation in their beliefs regarding living a simple lifestyle, old order still use buggies, new ones drive cars and wear normal clothes. Went to one of her relatives wedding. Over 2 hour sermon in middle of the ceremony, in the summer, no AC in the building. Some relatives came in cars, others in buggies. They have hitching rail under shade trees for the horses.

Both Mennonite and Amish go back to the 16th century reformation in Europe as Anabaptists, rejecting the concept of infant baptism, and belief that the church was the community of saved and not a state religion. Both are very sound biblical doctrines. They are generally pacifist and just seek a simple lifestyle. They were heavily persecuted for their beliefs by the state ran Roman Catholic Church, who executed many of their leaders.

Was watching something on the Hutterites last night. It's go big or go home as far as farming goes. NO technology barriers there. If they can't buy something BIG enough, they will build it.
