The police can measure the depth of the impact on the panels using a vehicle database and calculate the impact speed quite accurately, skid marks are deceptive due to ABS and traction control on newer cars.
I used to work with highway patrol as part of my work in getting people back on track after accidents, I needed as much background info as I could get and they always provided, I have no doubt this will all come out at the coroners inquest if there is one.
It is amazing how resilient a small tree can be, I saw a BMW written off after hitting a 6" eucalypt, the car was a real mess

There's a 6" white birch tree a few miles from here that somebody got killed on. Every time I drive past it I shake my head, it didn't hurt the tree a bit.

Hey, something as innocent as a mild ditch and culvert can work wonders too. Knew a sweet young girl who lost her head, after the dually she was riding in left the road and hit a ditch and culvert. Probably having a great time too, up until that second.

Just pisses me off that people keep talking about how much they value life, but their actions, and in this particular case, and the driving public in general, doesn't reflect that.

Everyone can't be perfect and never make a mistake like you. But I guess that weeds out the dumb ones so there's more room for you.
