I work for the company flying people back to the US from China and reading comments on those news stories really was irritating and amazed me at just how stupid and deluded a lot of people are. A story that should be about getting our citizens out of a potentially dangerous situation turns into conspiracy about population control and worse. If you were there for work or whatever you'd probably be pretty happy that people were wiling to come get you.
Anyways, we all like our stuff, and we like to buy it at low prices. That gets done by having the stuff produced where its cheaper to hire people to do the job and less regulation to worry about. China has some of the worst air quality in the world for this reason. Much like the US used to have awful air quality when we produced things in our own country. We basically exported our pollution is one way of looking at it. Many of these products simply cannot be made in the US because of regulation. On one hand we want cheap stuff, on the other we want to breathe. On one hand we want to keep jobs in the US, on the other we're not willing to pay the premium on what it costs to produce things here. We're a victim of our own prosperity in many ways.
I fly tons of products from China all year round to the United States. I also fly products to China from the US, Canada, Chile and other places. As they grow they like products from other parts of the world too. Cherries from Chile, Lobsters from New Brunswick, Apples from Washington, etc. In return we get Iphones, shoes, computers, etc at prices we are willing to pay. I personally get to work every month flying the stuff around that people buy on both sides of the Pacific. I think it's a pretty good system for everybody involved.
As for the virus, are we getting the whole story? probably not. As stated before we all live in a web of lies and propaganda. My experience is that China isn't some despotic 3rd world **** hole like it gets portrayed. It's actually pretty modern for the most part, with contrasting poor rural areas. They're probably a couple decades behind in a lot of ways and then on par or more advanced in others. The people stare at you like you're in a zoo because how many 260lb white guys do they see every day? For the most part they are very friendly and helpful, and I feel safer walking the streets there than most places in the world.
Yes they do censor their news, I've seen it first hand, especially when the Hong Kong protests were going on. They feed the people BS just like we do in the US. They block Google and Facebook but any local can show you how to bypass the nanny state stuff better than anyone. I find it to be an interesting place with some great people.
