Blizzard of 1983

   / Blizzard of 1983 #11
This is the first year that I haven't been able to go ice fishing at least once due to no ice. I didn't go a few years ago one year because of a short season and personal commitments, but there is just no safe ice here this year. First time since I've been ice fishing, since I was 8, so first time in 51 years. I haven't shoveled or plowed my driveway one time this year. Today is the first significant snow we've had, and it's the middle of February.

:confused3:

Was one of those airport snowblowers on Craig’s list, two Detroit Diesels, low hours, 25K. I sent the link to a friend that was talking about snowblowers. He said we could go in on it together, I said sure, I’ll take it in the winter and he can have it in the summer! It is the kind of thing you need desperately once in a lifetime!

I knew a farmer that adapted a large blower onto an old combine. It worked pretty darn well. He was up high enough to see everything with the blower being out-front where it should be.

Now that I would love to see! Some serious fab & engineering skills there!

We lived on a small farm along a State Route (161) at the time of the blizzard, and it was still 4 days before the Army National Guard finally broke through near our farm, with giant snow blowers. We were without power for 10 days. Thank God for the old pot belly stove in our basement, with a big pile of firewood in the next room. Kept the house semi-comfortable, and provided a cooking surface. We normally had rations for about 2 weeks at a time in those days, so we made do pretty well, with our family of 5, plus 2 neighbors and a stray dog we had to rescue. I don't remember how long it took to finally get back to "normal", but it was several weeks.

A not-so-gentle reminder of who is really in charge.... :)

Two of my young neighbors went ice fishing on my neighbors pond last weekend.

What is this "ice fishing" you speak of Richard? :)

We have had a little "cold snap" for the last couple of days, But I doubt any ponds have much in the way of even a skim of ice on them. It is 31 this morning with a predicted high of 51 today.

Yeah James, not much ice fishing in Pineapple Land. :D

It warmed up all night here. We were 26F this morning. Expected high of 43. If you guys down there wouldn't suck up so much of that heat it would be warmer up here!!! I'm hoping this was our last hooraw of cold weather for this Winter. :)
