I keep toying with the idea of a pickup truck. But then I have a day like today. Another 16' load on my wee 4x8 trailer. 3' ahead over the tongue, the rest out behind (flagged). There's no way I could do that with a pick up ... unless maybe angled up over the cab and out past the tailgate, but that might be too high. My whole load today was about 30" off the ground.
You know, pickups can pull trailers, too. :D

Which would kinda defeat the point of having the pickup bed to start with. SUVs and vans are far better the vast majority of the time.

'Xactly. That's why I have a wagon. Lots of interior storage for things that can't be out in the weather. It just doesn't have the guts to pull a tractor on a trailer.

Which is why I have a 2500 suburban. I’m probably going to trade it for a van but it works and is paid for.. It doesn’t tow as good as a heavy pickup but if a 2500 suburban or ford excursion won’t get the job done then you need a dually ton truck with a flat or dump bed.

For most of my needs a pickup is the best tool for the job. I see people with SUVs hauling their propane and/or fuel cans on one of those receiver carriers and wonder what would happen if they got rear ended. (Am I the only one who remembers the Ford Pinto debacle?) A nice dually ton truck would be nice, but only useful for about .5 % of my needs... and most of those could be handled with an off road vehicle, as it would rarely leave my property. No matter what I have, it's illegal in most states to have a load extending more than 4 feet over the back of the vehicle.
Other people's uses may vary which is why there's such a wide range of choices out there. All that I ask is that people don't haul with a vehicle that's inadequate for the job; there are other people on the roads.

And all I ask is for those other drivers that need 500' safety net to stay OFF the roads.
