Vintage Moldboard plow
Hello,
I'm hoping someone on this thread can help me identify the history of this plow; year, use on farm, etc. Please see attached pics.
I recently found at an estate sale in Colorado and will now proudly display on my property.
Thanks to all.
Curt

Appears to be in excellent shape.

Good find.

Horses or mules?

Welcome to TBN
Does the top of beam that bottom attaches to have a number stamped/forged into it? Do any other parts have any numbers or insignia's?

What I found are two raised forged numbers.

1. HX8R found on the 45 deg wheel axle housing
2. HX6R found on the footrest pedal.

What is the significance of the 45 deg wheel axle? Why design like this?

Thanks!

The rear wheel sits in the furrow against the inside edge to counteract the plow share and mouldboard forces.

That wheel holds against the furrow and helps keep the plow moldboard from wandering away from the furrow.

For good plowing, holding that moldboard in position relative to the furrow left from previous path is important.

ps: like Egon said.. :)

Thanks!
Heavy, took 5 guys to load into pickup. Was frozen in 6 inches of snow and ice. Used pick ax, shovel, ice picks (and a little hot water) to break it loose.

May I ask what counteracts the share & moldboard forces on horse/mule drawn walking plow that has no wheels???

The guy walking has his hands full keeping the plow forces balanced and "aimed" in the right direction.. with the reins around his neck and both hands on the handles.
