Thank you. It would have been a lot cheaper and easier if she would have liked anything that was available at the stores, but she hates painted and fancy cabinets, so I had to make it myself.

I've been blessed with three shops in my life.

My first was a 30x50x10. Two overhead doors and a walk in. I was in it 19 years. I lost it in a fire. It was parked full with my diesel truck, two Jeeps, two tractors, two ATVs and of course all my tools.

$193,000 insurance claim. Thank God daily for insurance. That claim is a story for another thread....

I can’t even begin to think of how heartbreaking that must have been.

No human or animal injury I hope?

How did the fire start? Where you there when it happend?

We were asleep in the house. Bedroom window facing South on the lawn. Shop sat North of the house. 01:30 a.m. I was awakened by what I thought was thunder. This was in February. Thought that was odd, raised my head off the pillow and looked South at the lawn. Everything had a strange orange glow. The sound was things exploding in the shop.

I jumped up and ran outside to the shop naked. Had a Jeep parked in front of the shop, no battery on it. I leaned up against it to push it away from the fire. It was a bit hot on my bare butt. Ran back to the house to get dressed. Told Terry to call fire department. Our house phone line came to the shop first, then to the house. Land line wasn't working. She had to use her cell phone.

Got dressed and strung out a garden hose to wet down the house. Wind was carrying flaming embers onto the roof of the house. When volunteer fire department showed up there wasn't anything to do but protect the house.

Cause was never determined. Had a wood stove but it was down to a small embers fire when I went to the house at 8 p.m. Had a battery charger running on timer when I left the shop. Only oddity about the whole thing was that some of the doors were standing wide open on the Dodge truck. They were closed when I went in the house. With that many vehicles in there it was plausible that one of them started it. Or maybe the shop electrical although I'd never had any problems with it.

In most regards I have the best wife ever. She was standing in the driveway with me and my Sons watching everything burn. She was crying. She kept saying why couldn't it have been the house and not your shop. Discounting sleep time, I spend many more hours in my shop than I do my house.

No injuries or deaths.

It was a life changing event. Only surpassed by the death of my Son 25 years ago.

Had to list my contents for insurance claim. For a month or so I kept a tablet and pencil by the recliner. I'd recline and stare at the ceiling. Imagine walking in the door and turning right. What's hanging on the wall? What's on the bench? What's sitting on the floor? I grouped things the best I could such as wrench sets, hammers, crescent wrenches, etc. I had 1,875 line items on the final contents list. Some of them had more than one such as hammers.

That part was grueling. Extremely stressful. Extremely heartbreaking when remembering Dad's tools and/or tools of my deceased Son. Can't replace that stuff.

As the years passed I'd remember things I had that I forgot to list.

It was a $193,000 insurance claim and took 2 years to close.
