After dropping these two loads at a muddy spot in the road,

standard.jpg

I decided I better go get them out today, as it rained some last night and we have more rain coming tomorrow. SO, with water standing all over today, I took the dozer out to retrieve the loads,

standard.jpg

I had already separated the loads, so I decided to pull them the last quarter mile one at a time,

standard.jpg

and with the new water in the fields, it was very muddy,

standard.jpg

So I was glad I was on tracks, as I didn't want my lanes all rutted up!

standard.jpg

Once the heavier load was at the splitting site, I went back for the load of logs,

standard.jpg

and it was easy peasy to pull it through,

Next will be to get it all cut/split and into boxes!

You have a dozer!! I am so jealous!! I can only imagine how much trouble I could get into with one of those!!

Well, I don't have to look it up, I was there, here's what the SS guys had left,

When the TW5 was pushing it's last piece through!

With the TW5 you are making 4 pieces every pass, and you don't have to return the ram all the way for the next piece to be shoved though...

No question about it, the TW5 blew it away and some of that was, because both splitters had some bigger harder to split rounds, the SS would need 2 hits to make one split, mean while the TW pushed them right through the 4-way.

I have your basic Speeco horizontal/vertical I've had for 25 years , does me fine.

I have no desire to own a Super Split, but for a real comparison, what is the cost of a SS vs. a TW5? I have a TW-1 that I bought barely used. After the first owner passed, his widow decided she needed a lawn mower more than a log splitter. If the SS is more competitively priced to a TW-1 then the TW5 isn't really a fair match. It's like putting a wheel loader up against a toro dingo or a pro chainsaw up against a Crapsman 14". I am all for the TW5, but to keep the matchups even, I think price should be a consideration. I think my TW-1 would do well against a SS if we were splitting elm.

I looked at the $6K TW-5 this morning on the internet. Add in the extras and you can pay upwards of $8K for it. The SS is under $3K. That TW-5 is a Cadillac for sure with the hydraulic adjustable wedge, hydraulic lift table and work table top. I guess if I had a lot of extra money floating around I would own one of these. I paid $1400.00 for my used SS back in, I think, 2000 - 2001. Locally there is a guy selling a used 10 year old TW-5 for $4400.00 with no hydraulic wedge. The Timberwolf is definitely a nice machine. If I win the lottery I'll buy one. I found another TW-5, no hydraulic wedge, with an escalator for only $14,000. They don't give these away used.

I cut split and stack pretty much year round. A little of this, a little of that. Slow and steady for me.
Of course the weather has a lot to do with it.

I'm the same way , a couple hours here.. a couple hours there.. I only need 2-3 cords for the year.

I paid just over 3K for my 3HD new, and that included the 4-way wedge and table grate. You really don't need a hydraulic wedge, and with the way I cut my firewood over a trailer I don't need a lift either...

My 3HD is slightly faster than a 5 and has the same power, it's an amazing machine...

I never looked at splitting up wood as being a "race". If you don't get that satisfaction from all that effort - buy oil or whatever to stay warm. :confused3:
I go through around 6 cord a year, am always at least one year ahead, and as Gordon said it's really not all that big of a job. Now if you're trying to sell wood, that's another matter completely.

As I age, making the process easier is my goal and speed becomes a futile effort.
The past few years those racks you see in the pictures have cut my handling down to a minimum. Once off the splitter and directly on to a rack it's done for a year or so until I move the whole rack (around 90-95 c/f) to the house for the last 2 "handlings". The rack is 3 steps from the wood boiler (inside) to a small bin that holds a day or two's worth, the last time we touch it is into the fire. We're going on 11 years now with this Boiler and it seems like a silly thing, but the first shower (of wood heating season) with hot water made by MY wood some how feels better and guilt less use of hot/hot setting on the clothes washer along with hot water washing of vehicles is another plus, not to mention a 100* boiler room that dries the clothes.:D

I agree, I have wanted one since I was about 4 years old, I could definitely do some damage with one of those.

I agree faster is better but most of us home owners only split 5 or 6, maybe 8, cord a year. It's not that big a job. Then the splitter sits idle the rest of the year. For me super speed is not on top of the priority list.

gg
Agreed. Certainly I sometimes wish my 30?+ year old northern hydraulics splitter was faster..... My time is approximately free. Though my billable rate at work is much better than that...haha.

I paid $1900 for my used TW-1 three years ago, I think list is around $2700 new. Not sure how long the original owner had it, but he barely wore any paint off.
