I have never greased the bar tip ever but I clean my stuff very regularly. But I'm also not doing it for a living. I have never heard of greasing the tip of stihl's bars but maybe you can. I just know I never have or my father who has cut wood for 40+ years has not either. Skeans1 nice video. You a logger for a living?

I saw this picture on FB. I知 thinking that probably didn稚 go as planned.

Interesting method of changing the fluids. Maybe he is parting it out but he has to let it hang for a while?

You need to translate that in Yankee terms... Whats this Batman utility belt you have on with all the jingle jangles, buy it somewhere? Post a picture of it all loaded up for tree falling and picture of the jacks you mention, almost sounds like you do this for a living.

I spent 10 years falling timber in production 6 days a week 60 to 10 hours a day before getting into a harvester. WP_000095.jpg

These are my jacks I use when doing this type of work one is a 45 ton the other is a Silvey tree saver back pack setup that’ll lift 125 tons.

To the other cuts like a sizwheel and a Dutchman both aren’t what I’d call something you should try without some knowledge of how the holding wood works.20151103_095252.jpg

Gee I dont think I'd like a square sharpen chain, I think saw chains cut better when sharpened with slight hook, when chain cuts better then thats what I'd want on a small saw like my Ehco 501 and 550xp then adjust the cut speed by the rakers and tooth top angle to chainsaw hp. I do sometimes in muddy wood square up the top angle a little but not the front cut angle, always a hook.

Square is great stuff it’s so much smoother cutting, faster, and great for using a smaller saw. The depth gauges I’ll do fresh off the roll of chain stock chain doesn’t cut hardly at all without pressure I want a chain to self feed why make the job harder then it needs to be. With a chain like that I’ll use a 562 with a 32” bar without issues.

^^^Consider that if we stacked 3 of our trees one on top of the other, they still might not be as tall as what you have out there. :D That has a pretty serious impact on felling methods.
I measure trees for a living so have a pretty good idea how tall they are on the east coast. While there may be a few which hit the 100 foot mark they are few and far between.

On the subject of used engine oil; I ran it very briefly and decided that I didn't like the mess. At the end of the day the saw was just plain nasty, which increases cleanup time. I do have some partial jugs of unused oil which I sometimes blend with the B&C, the used oil I prefer to give to the local saw shop to burn in his waste oil furnace.

Yes I am, my father and I own a contract logging operation where we specialize in commercial thinning, as well as owning a tree farm in NW Oregon.

Most of these same techniques work in shorter smaller wood as well. What works on steep ground works on flat ground all techniques transfer over the same. What’s always amazed me is how far behind the East Coast is on practices as well as on safety when it comes to the industry.

I havent seen $5.00 bar oil in 30 years...............

Tractor Supply bar oil is regularly just over $6 per gallon and when it's on sale, it's 2 for $9.99. That's what I use, I tried used oil and didn't like the way it worked. The used oil goes into the wood stove now, a little at a time.

But I do not buy bar and chain oil either. It is supposed to save wear on a bar, but bars still wear out when using itt. I use old engine oil, old vegetable oil, anything I can get for free or very cheap (if I have to buy oil).

What bar and chain oil costs, is far more than what a bar is worth. I use junk oil and still get 150-200 cords per bar. Why would I spend 10 times more on special bar and chain oil to get an extra 50 cords on a $40 bar. It just does not make any sense. Besides, how else would I get rid of my old engine oil? (LOL)

Good points.
