Before the Covid hit, I would have recomended Sherwin Williams. I've been buying from them for 20 years and I've always considered them to be the best source of paint and stain. I'm not sure why they came up with this policy, but they are not allowing anybody in their store and they are not color matching, or making paint from their previous color matched cans. Kelly Moore is open and operating with limited people in the store and doing everything that you need a paint store to do. I sprayed a kitchen island with their paint and I'm amazed at how nice it is to work with. I have not bought their stain, and my only experience with their paint is their oil based paint, but that paint is so much nicer the Sherwin Williams, that I am going to buy a lot more paint from them, and if I need stain, that's where I'm going to go to see what they have. I might be splitting hairs here, and I've never had any issues with Sherwin Williams stain, so if they are close to you, and if they will sell it to you, then Sherwin Williams is still a good choice.

Thanks Eddie I’ll check with Shermin William, I’ve got a good friend that has an account with them.

will you be going w/solid or semi transparent stain? cypress has an attractive natural hue about it, but like any new wood, can be difficult to retain the original natural look.
most of my experience is with solid type by choice since it offers max uv protection, etc, but there are probably members here who have worked w/semi to retain grain, etc. Yes, there's always clear but don't have much experience with that. Personally, Thompson's water seal or related products are a joke & waste of time/money

agree with Eddie Walker, SW is the best around. enjoy the final stage of your good work

I would like to stay with semi transparent sense it shows the wood grain but I haven’t made up my mind yet.

Sikkens Cetol Log stain is what i used on these. This is the Butternut color, which is a lot darker than the color swatch would lead you to believe...

I’ve been doing a little research and I agree Sherwin-Williams paints are very good but there stains don’t have very good reviews.
As for sikkens it’s changed to ppl proluxe which has decent reviews. Has anybody heard of TWP stains and Armstrong Clark wood stains both got very good reviews.

Reviews can be tricky. I have met a lot of people that blamed the stain, or the painter for a bad stain job, and in every case they stained treated wood right.after it was installed. There is so much moisture in treated wood that you have to wait 4 to 6 months before its dry enough to stain or paint.

I work at Kelly Moore, we don't have a branded stain, but do carry, Storm, Cabot, and Armstrong Clark. Armstrong Clark is our biggest seller, and only full oil based stain we sell. We have a few oil based Cabot stains. Have only heard good things about Penofin, it's an oil based stain I've only seen at ace hardware in Angel's camp, ca. I have used both Armstrong Clark, and Cabot. The Cabot solid body on my house looks good and has latest for 5 years so far. The Cabot Australian timber oil on my deck only lasts about 10 months, switched over to Armstrong Clark on my deck and has been lasting about a year and a half. Goes on easy and looks beautiful. The Cabot was about the same looked beautiful too.

True about the reviews, that’s why I’m asking on here to get info on what other people have used and had good success with. Is it best to use a oil base or water base stain. I would like a stain that would penetrate into the wood. I’ve got some homedepot Behr semi transparent stain that I put on a sample board and it doesn’t penetrate, it’s more like a paint. I’ve also got some Minwax stains that I’ve tried and it seems to penetrate into the word. If I used something like Minwax would I need the put anything else over the stain for protection. Guys I ready appreciate the help so keep it coming.
Thanks
