Interesting the way you cut 6x6s, do they stay straight when not centered in the log? I kind of remove the outside of the log in 1 bys, or 2 bys till I get the right dimension and centered.

Standing them can be fun

2 down, 4 to go.

That was my son's idea, he thought it would be easier to saw in half then slide top half off saw deck as appose to turning the whole log to get four square sides hence the term manual mil, it was a green oak and it didn't stay straight, my hemlocks that was setting for a year and stayed straight and was lot lighter. Makes me wish for a tree that wont burn, wont rot, stays straight when sawing, lighter then cedar, stronger then steel...........

When you saw lumber you must get that Marry Poppins feeling, when you going to put that mill in a building. Why are those 6x6 on trailer dark? I would say standing a tall post up is hard by your self, do you get dirt falling back in hole with post digger? The last time I used one the dirt kept falling back in.

Mary Poppins? Hmmm

Someday a building would be nice, or at least a roof cover..

I treated those 6x6s with a non-pressure treating compound, supposed to be good for below ground and for in water like on dock wood.. I guess I wont know for sure how it does for a few years!

When I get to the depth I want I stop the auger in the ground, then pull it up, then engage the pto again to spin the dirt off not in the hole. I've only got a 6" auger so its kind of like drilling a pilot hole, then I increase the size and clean it out by hand.

I tried a different ploy. Last year I wanted a cover for my PTO shaft when nothing was attached... so I bought two. My logic was that if I kept the second on the shelf as a backup I will never lose the first.
Now if I can just remember which shelf I put it on... :D

You've heard of preventive maintenance? That's preventive purchasing.

Looks like you have the end on your cable as I do, it's the best cable end I ever had.

Yes, I like that end a whole lot better than the grab hook that was on there originally. Easy to replace, no cable end burrs poking out to stick me, and grabs a choker chain a lot more securely than the grab hook. It's especially useful in this situation, since the swivel on the hook helps keep the cable from getting twisted up when the log rolls down a side-hill. (I believe the Uniforest 35M, the next generation of my 35E winch comes with that end standard now.)

Hud-Son sells those cable ends. They used to sell one without the swivel that was rated for larger cables, but I don't see that one on their website now.

I cant find that blue swivel cable end anywhere now, bought mine on ebay two years ago because of someone on here mention it, maybe it was you. This afternoon my cable broke and boy wasn't it nice to have that swivel cable end, I did loose one slider tho, it's down there somewhere. I have one other accessory that is also very handy dandy in the woods when cable breaks, A cable cutter, I taped the end then cut the cable, then put the blue swivel back on, while in the mean time I kept saying, ( dont loose the wedge, dont loose the wedge, dont loose the wedge......) I'll be tracing that out just in case I loose the wedge since I cant find replacement on-line. Also If you want a good in the woods cable cutter, this one has cut my cable 5 times so far in two years and still makes a clean cut on my 8mm cable or to the perfectionist, wire rope, the cheapest I see anywhere right now is on Amazon, that in itself is unusual.

No need to look, you can find that end here. Swivel End Fitter - T3 - Hud-son For 50 bucks though, I'd take care not to lose the one that I had. ;)

Looks like you knocked over the block that was sitting on the floor jack that was holding up this corner....

Looks like you knocked over the block that was sitting on the floor jack that was holding up this corner....

So when I'm cutting a log with a good amount of taper I raise the small end so the center of the log is the same height from the bunks on both ends, that way I cut that 6x6 with the core running straight through. After evening out 2 sides then I lower the log so it sits on the bunks. Bigger saws like Sawyer Rob has comes with a device built in to do that hydraulically.

I've upgraded the jack on my mill so I no longer need those blocks in there..
