Grew up in Pittsfield. Most of my family are still there.

South county is beautiful! I spent a lot of time hiking Monument Mountain and trails around that area.

Thanks for the link--I knew of the importance of managed fire in pre-colonial times in Massachusetts, but had no idea there was such recent guidance. Will look into that, appreciated.

Thanks, Gale. Wish I had one of your well built older tractors as well. From your examples and those of the others, it seems like there are lots of options to get things done, if one has patience and persistence.

Thanks, 1010

Just for my learning, what makes you recommend the pull type?

It can help keep the low tree limbs off of you and the tractor once you figure it out. The other it easier on the tractor and it's much more flexible behind the tractor than a third arm cutter. There are some semi mount cutters that don't have a tongue and use the lift arms but no third arm, it allows the cutter to act like a pull type, but the cutter can't be picked up off the ground completely. Just would depend on the terrain.
There are pros and cons to all types. To me the pull type wins at the end of the day.

One other consideration on your mower, any 3PH mounted mower increases the length of your turning area required, where a pull mower acts like a trailer when turning.
To expand on this, yes a pull type is going to be longer behind the tractor but it will pivot as you turn. This can allow you to mow closer to objects while keeping the tractor (and you further away). A couple of cautions here also, one is you must always maintain awareness of the side angle of the PTO shaft or you could damage the shaft, the mower or the tractor. (Any 1 to all 3). The other is that you have length you must account for with space to maneuver.
The 3PH mower swings wide with the tractor. If you are in tight areas with trees or buildings or other obstacles, this may be an issue. 3PH mowers are mounted much closer to the operator which means if need to get under limbs or other low hanging obstacles, both the tractor height and the operator safety come into the equation. Also you have to maintain an awareness of the position of the PTO shaft in an upward movement direction or risk the same types of damage as the side to side movement mentioned above.

One final caution on any PTO implement. You must determine the proper length of the shaft for your setup before ever using the implement. It needs to remain long enough to maintain adequate overlap at its most extended angle, but at the same time short enough at is most collapsed length to not risk a ‘jammed’ condition which again may damage any one or combination of the 3 (the implement gearbox, the tractor PTO mechanisms, or the PTO shaft)

Sorry I am long ‘winded’ today!
