The 5xxx you're considering are the same size frame. Difference is horsepower of engine and a few things like tire size, transmission, etc. Since you're considering a 5045, they're all open station right ? the 5045 is open station only. I did the same years ago. Bought a 5200 .. same frame as the 5300 & 5400. Has served well for 23 years.

Thanks. I'm sure that I could buy the 5045 and be perfectly happy with it. I just don't know exactly what my needs are yet since I haven't had the property long. I have a mechanic coming out this weekend to check the 2030 and a ranch hand coming out to show me how to operate it. I think I'm going to try to use it for a while until I determine what my needs are. The 2030 is 2WD so the 5045 would have some added value from that standpoint alone. Thanks for the input!

you should go drive a hydro and power reverser and gear shift [which is what the 9 speed is I believe ] and ease of use is hydro try a 4066 not to confuse the issue but if you have not been on a newer tractor they have changed

Just (imho)... w/ a "cursed emissions 2016 JD5056e" I run up & down the fields mowing at consistent speed w/ my PTO 7' finish mower cutting properly.... (more or less / acceptable).

(sync shuttle)

I bought the 5065E with the power reverser. So far, I love it. I know I have a lot to learn but at this point, I'm thoroughly enjoying the property, the tractor, the goats and the pond. Glad I purchased all of it.

Not sure all the options on the 5000E tractors but: the transmission has two or three options. Would also agree pass on the 9 speed transmission. Third function, rear remotes? JD insurance is good.

I've used nearly identical Deere tractors with the 9x3 Top Shaft Synchronized/SyncShuttle and the 12x12 PowerReverser. The TSS is a very traditional mechanical transmission that's been around for decades and if you've used older gear drive tractors, it will feel very natural to use. On the 5E tractors it can also be set up with a creeper, has a dry clutch, and still has a mechanical lever-operated PTO engagement. The PowerReverser uses a wet clutch, there is a reverse stalk on the steering column instead of a reverse gear in the gearshift, an electrohydraulic PTO engagement, and has a lot more electronics. The fourth gear in each range in the PowerReverser is probably the nicest feature of the PowerReverser transmission. There is a learning curve to smoothly operate the PowerReverser transmission and you'll probably wind up in or out of neutral when you don't want to at first. I do not particularly like that reverse in each gear is about 10% faster than forward where it "should" be the same speed such as in a CNH mechanical non-synchronized reverse lever (which I actually like a lot better than Deere's setup.) The 5E with the PowerReverser I've used does not have the modulator and it would be nice if it did have it to slow down the forward/reverse transition without clutching.

The 3 cyl 5Es can have two rear SCVs, two mid SCVs, and then one more on a diverter on the loader joystick. I recommend the two mid and two rear SCVs and would only get the third on a diverter if there was some very specific piece of equipment that required three SCVs and you didn't want to remove the loader. I'd loop a hose to one of the rear SCVs if I were running a grapple, for example.

I like the current hook-and-linch-pin Deere carrier better than the skid steer carrier. The skid steer carrier is more fussy to get seated correctly than the Deere carrier, I've used both.

The differences between the 5045E and the other 3 cyl 5Es is that the 5045E is only available with the TSS transmission, open station. The others can have either transmission and are available in a cab or open station. Standard rear tire sizes do vary with model with R1 tires (same for all models if using R3/R4s) but you can specify 16.9x28 R1 rears on the 5045E or 5055E instead of the smaller standard ones. Front tire sizes are also the same on all models for the same type of tire.

Good informative review of the 5E units. I “assumed” the Power Reverser transmission had identical speeds for Forward and Reverse and direction was the only change. I started out with a 5105 that had a 8F/4R Sync Shuttle transmission. You could put it in a gear and go between “A” and “R” and be really close to same speed.....much closer than the 9F/3R on my current 5303. I like the extra range and do use all three sometimes, but honestly think I preferred the 8F/4R transmission.

After further reflection I have the 'Power Reverser' not the (sync shuttle). Until the enlightening post by @mo1 I guess I thought they were the same thing. I absolutely love the power reverser transmission for just about everything & my only picayune complaint is that on rare occasion it will throw itself into neutral; haven't quite figured out what precipitates this but it's usually going down hill at certain speeds - I think... It's funny how jumping from my gear driven larger 5425 to my 5065e doesn't seem to be an issue (must be some switch in the brain, lol) same is true for x 3 of my manual transmission vehicles, where reverse gears are different (BMW, Nissan, Ram)

so far I love mine. I've had minimal issues with the power reverser being in neutral...usually my fault. The only thing I've really had trouble with is the throttle...branches seem to hit it perfectly and shut the throttle down. Now that I've seen that 2-3 times, I know what to look for. First time I thought the tractor was overheated and shutting down.

One gripe that I might have with the 5065e (economy version, I know) is the fact that that they have such narrow tires on the front. I know that when I got mine, I specified 16.9 - 28 on the rear (they do come narrower than that, apparently). The rear tires are great! I just wish for more 'tire patch' on the front... Not sure if anyone has replaced the FRONT OEM's w/ R4's (for instance), while maintaining their 'Agg tires' in the back, without screwing up the MFWD... ? (my musings ~ when I eventually have to replace the tires)

- Outside Diameter (OD) ... obviously is the issue
- in the past I've swapped Agg tires on the front or rear while still using the "worn" front or backs w/ new 'mates'...? hmmm

Edit...
@Jlblake This post isn't about us 5065e owners lamenting as much as it as it is about you, lol... Sorry about that! GrnMtnMan

@Jlblake, just work that hydraulic 'shunt' lever to the right of your seat (diverting hydraulic flow from the rear arms to SCV etc) IN COLD WINTER... Mine became a problem & this might be 'anecdotal at best' but in order to get my 3rd function (joystick remote) to work I had to spend quite a bit of time moving that lever at various levels of throttle ~ keep it moving in cold weather / add a trickle charger / add a 'block heater' plug in... (better yet garage the 'green machine')

- 3rd function kit as you'll eventually end up buying one for your new 5065e (as I did), lol... :) BTW, flip those front wheels (great off-set) for greater tire width / inherent stability, also helps in mowing approximation of cut (imho)
