And if that criteria is above their past performance to a point that meeting it is unreasonably difficult, THAT is being forced out.

Then how does the corporate buyer survive?

Bring a dealer into this conversation that's been forced out?

I'll wait.

The problem, Digger is your use of Unreasonably difficult which varies case to case. The company is not in business to provide a dealer with product to sell just to keep the dealer happy at all cost. The dealer is becoming more a part of the corporate structure.

I have seen it with so many businesses and even professions over the last 20 years especially. Medical practices, law practices, dental, chiro, insurance, auto body shops, salvage auctions, accounting firms, auto dealers, Liquor stores, restaurants, etc.

I knew things were changing in the restaurant business when a Pizza Hut manager started referring to his restaurant as a store. My Dad owned a package store. The cafe next door was not a store except in the eyes of a franchisor. When the aggregators came in they started calling the body shops stores.

Progress, go figure.

Let's say a location has consistently been doing a million dollars a year in sales and has a satisfied clientele that returns often. Most of their businesses is 10 or 12 certain models.

Corporate comes in and demands they increase their sales to three million and that they begin to stock and sell 20 models they're not at all familiar with and don't have parts in stock for.

Reasonable or not?

If the local market can bear the increase, yes, reasonable. If I owned JD stock I'd be mad as **** if they didn't demand it.

Y'all keep missing the point. Why mess with a successful business? Why not open a second location with those other models? Let the two specialize in what they know and the customers they know. They already do it with Ag and Construction. Why not have an AG store separate from the family owned L&G and small tractor store?

I'm not sure what to say.

1. They are not as successful as they can be so lose market share.

2. Open a second JD store in the same area as Mom and Pop? Now that would be cruel and they would painfully starve out.

3. We are talking about AG and Construction.

4. JD is a do all store. Mine has lawn tractors along with sxs, large AG, combines, tillage equipment, CTLs, brush cutters, planters, weed eaters, push mowers, kid's pedal tractors, JD caps, large stock of JD parts, large selection of bolts/hardware, large stock of hydraulic fittings/ hoses and competent mechanics, sales persons, parts experts and a finance expert.

What would your Mom/Pop store offer?

I think it's time I stopped at some of those mega stores...

My closest dealers serve big AG and the Kubota Dealer carries lots of stock and parts but that is it.

In WA state the dealer also sells full line Honda equipment, Stihl and Echo plus Snapper and more...

My guess is there are regional differences...

Ours is exactly the same right down to the pedal tractors but, they have 7 stores and put the local mom and pop JD dealer out of business or should I say JD pulled their franchise. My Kubota dealer, same boat. Was a CNH dealer and CNH pulled the plug on their franchise which isn't all bad, I think they do better with Kubota actually. They still get CNH parts but cannot sell new machines. Not so good with the other CNH dealer east of me. CNH pulled their franchise and they had zip to fall back on and almost went **** up but landed a Kioti franchise and sell Kioti now. I know the owners personally and it was just plain corporate rotten. In fact it caused health issues for the one partner who was worried about his employees. terrible way to do business.

My Kubota dealer is the old school mom and pop store, right down to the worn glass counter and stuff sitting everywhere. No AC, no fancy counters, no glitzy salesmen, just honest hard working country folk. Just the way I like it. Everything is done on a handshake. Bought my last 2 Kubota's that way. Never signed any papers until they were delivered.

Too bad that business ethic is becoming rare today.

GREED and STUPIDITY seem to rule the day.

Heard some local Hundai Dealership Ads. Customers are now reffered to as GUESTS! What's wrong with this world?

Grandfather started in the car business back in the 20's and throughout his career well into the 1970's he insisted his sales staff list home phone number on business card saying it was all about trust... he personally also listed his home address... about as old school as you can get...
