One time I was out in my yard digging a hole. It was hot and I was in overalls and filthy. Work called with an emergency and I dropped my shovel and drove right in on my day off to resolve it. I'm in the Ad Services Department working on their UNIX system and typesetters and this same boss walks by and gives me a dirty look. I resolve the problem, they make deadline, and I go home. The next business day for me, he calls me in his office and tells me if he ever sees me in the building looking like a ditch digger, he's gonna fire me....
So I explain to him that I was, in fact, digging a ditch and figured he'd want me to come in ASAP to resolve the problem VS stopping to take a shower and change my clothes. Is it OK if I'm late next time? Then he starts trying to tell me that I shouldn't be digging ditches on my day off if I'm on call and might have to come in, bla bla bla....
It's that kind of stuff that makes you want to punch someone in the face, quit, walk out, etc...
