Do you enjoy your job?

I love what I do, but hate my job. I am embarking on my 28th year as a computer programmer. I love creating something from nothing. The thing that sucks in my job is that ‘the customer’ thinks they know what they want...they don’t. But I do, and my advice usually kicks in 6-8 months after what they told me to code. So frustrating...and while I am salaried and shouldn’t care about the rework...I view it as a huge waste of everyone’s time. And management is the worst, all they care about is reports, reports, reports. Newsflash, you can’t manage via reports.

I also work at a nationwide law firm that you have probably seen commercials for. Very political, on the wrong side of my beliefs, but they literally print money. Just trying to hang on five or so more years till retirement...

I know exactly what you mean. It's tough to be a creative person who can envision a finished work and how it should be done, and be bridled by less creative minds who can't envision the same. It saps all the enjoyment out of the creative process and turns it into just...work. Think how bad it must suck to be a tattoo artist. You don't just "fall in" to that job. It has to be the result of a particular passion, a love of art, creativity, personal expression, and years of patient practice in the pursuit of one day being good enough to brand people with permanent art. And when you finally get there, it turns out your job is 90% comprised of transcribing Instagram photos off of people's phones onto their buttcheeks. Copying other artists work, and it had better look exactly the same or you're not getting a tip.

Start this over as a new thread and ask... Do you like your marriage.... Or do you pray that the Lord calls you home as quick as possible to get you out of this...?

Oh goodness, let's not go there! LOL

Who'da thunk it? Pulled out of college by the draft board for Vietnam and end up here.
Yeah, God is good but that's another story.
As old men, we've got boatloads of 'em!

As a younger guy, I would actually greatly appreciate an "old guy life stories" thread. By age, I am considered a "Millennial" (yuck), but hate that I am identified as one. I appreciate, value, and enjoy the stories of the older generation of men whom I identify with more than my sorry and largely pathetic generation.

My first boss at the Newspaper was a woman that was about 15 years older than me. Great boss. Super knowledgeable with impeccable notes and ability to teach the material. We both moved around the company for a couple decades, and she was getting ready to retire. I was reminiscing with her about things, and said something about "These younger kids they're hiring are nice, but, man, they annoy me. Did I annoy you like that when I was hired?" Without missing a beat, she replied "You still do!".

Weeeeeeell, I'm gen x, we're the reason you millennials are so effed up. :D

Just kidding, your generation only seems to suck more coz we're living in the information age, news 24/7, internet, twitter, fb, whatever...information overload about all your naughty deeds. Every generation has it's share of suckiness, situation normal.

One of my early jobs, in the early '60's was as a grease monkey at a Chrysler dealership in my home town. The place was owned by an older lady, late 60's early 70's. One day she caught me talking to one of my friends out on the sidewalk. She walked up to me and said "Son if you can't find anything else to do there is always a broom in the corner."

Let me see how short I can make this scenario.

The doors to prison isolation cells (Death Row) are all electrically controlled.
When a button is depressed in the Control Room, the current that holds the magnetic door ceases to hold the door in place.
These doors have pins {4X1" rods, top & bottom protrude into a steel plate & poured concrete} such that when the current ceases the pins default to open.
During any lightning event the back up gensets kick on and power is "Restored".
For that brief second each and every door opens and must be physically closed by a member of Staff.
Then the Main Control Room Officer can report that the Prison is once again secured.
{You can't imagine how many Incident Reports have to be written.}

Which of you has the cahonnes to be the first one down the wing?
It's a trick question with a snapshot into the human mind.
