My 4 year old black mouth cur found another one and got the full blast... again. This is either the 4th or 5th time. You'd think he'd learn at some point. I guess the tenacity of the BMC is what makes them so good for hunting hogs, coons and squirrels. I wish their breeding gave them a natural avoidance of skunks.

I'm dreading the day he finds a porcupine.

We keep the house well stocked with dawn dish detergent, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. For those that haven't tried it here's the recipe. We do a lather, sit for 10- 15 minutes, rinse and repeat

1 qt hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon of Dawn

It's that "rinse and REPEAT" part that keeps getting him in trouble. Maybe skip that "repeat" step this time. ;)

This reminds me of years ago when a friend of mine's wife, who had poor vision, failed to put her glasses on when she let the cat in the house....

That's similar to the one my neighbor friend gave us, just add in some essential oil.

Both of our chocolate labs (have now had the experience, Duke was just 3 weeks ago. Sunday evening about 9PM, you know, that one night I was finally going to get to bed early!
When Gunner got it months ago and came running in the house, OMG! I had never experienced that smell before! I've smelled skunk spray from a distance or after it was already road kill, nothing like what the immediate up close smell is! :yuck:

Years ago, we had a bunch of friendly barn cats, and I would feed them in our barn at night. One dark night, I was lazy and didn't get out a flash light, but I knew where everything was, so I filled the cat bowls with food. Many of the cats loved to be picked up and I felt one of the cats standing on his hind legs leaning on my leg to be picked up, so I picked him up...but he felt sort of different. As I looked closer I realized that I wasn't holding a cat, but a skunk!!! (I have night blindness and see very poorly in dim light.) I knew we had a friendly skunk that hung out with the cats, but I never imagined he'd want to be picked up. I very gently put him down and grabbed a flashlight. He was happily eating with the cats and periodically stopped and walked over to me for attention. This became a routine, though I didn't pick him up anymore. I named him Joe Skunk, and he happily followed me doing my chores and he became sort of a wild pet. He never sprayed me or any of my animals, including my dogs. I think my dogs thought he was a funny looking cat, because they never bothered him, and all of my cats and dogs are pals. Joe Skunk was with us for years, until one day he stopped coming. I guess something got him, and we were all sad about it. He was a character we all loved.

Time for the dog to learn to live in the barn :) Seen porcupine after affects, both Dog and wallet get hurt.
My dog started to go after a garter snake yesterday, got to her before the snake did, or that would have been a scene.
Good luck getting the BMC de-skunked and thanks for the recipe-we have a few skunks around, but so far we have no issues.

Two years ago a female skunk decided to setup a brothel under our patio. Before I could figure out where the skunks were coming from my one dog got hit 5 times and my other one only once

I had to call the county for them to setup traps...state regulations...and they caught 4 male skunks 1 female and a raccoon. I assumed the raccoon was a voyeurist

Here in SE TN and NW GA there are VERY few skunks. Every once in a while you will smell a road kill skunk but it is few and far between. I see more dead armadillos than I do skunks. My parents in Illinois always have them living under sheds and patio slabs. I wonder why there are so few around here. Now I am not complain cause I am sure my crazy dog would have gotten zapped already if we did.
