What is a warranty worth?

To the OP -
Gary - How long after purchase/delivery did it fail?
One hour of use could be after you've had it for a few months or more.
The EVERLAST PowerArc300 I bought in 2014 (for $270 :) ) is still working fine. We just used it this weekend for about 3 hours (maybe a total of 30 minutes welding arc time max). However over the last 6 years I doubt it's been on for more than 20 hours total.
I loaned it to my son in Virginia about 2017 and I think it just collected dust until I repossessed it last week.

The fact that your welder is still working is GREAT.
The thread title though is: "What is a warranty worth"
In your case, your warranty has provided zero value.....because you have not received any measurable benefit!

If anyone knows a welding equipment company that covers the shipping cost both ways for warranty work let me know.

Primeweld... has it, Unless something has changed.

Site still says Free return shipping.

3 years, but not sure what happens if 2 failures occur.

Their amazon feedback is really good.

talking inexpensive chicom units here

Another way to look at it is Companies warranty their products, not shipping and handling.

Amazon has created false impressions that shipping is somehow free. If you buy something from a store, normally you drive there to pick it up and have to drive back to return it.

Have you ever tried collecting from UPS or FedEX after they mangle or lost your shipment? Its a nightmare at best and you waste hours on hours in computerized phone system ****.

The way I look at it, the company's warranty period reflects their confidence in their products. I would go with a company that offers a 5 year warranty over a 1 year any day. I don't think free shipping is a reasonable expectation for bulky and heavy items.

I regularly deal with customers who have expectations that bulky, heavy items should have discount pricing AND free shipping. I tell them to try Amazon.
In the last 6 months UPS has claimed delivery of two separated shipments of over $100 each and shipper didnt insure it(Cut 50 plasma and Dewalt i1/2" impact gun) so no recourse to recoup costs. They (UPS)claim "we are investigating" and never any thing back from them. Both times we have been home all day and outside much of the time and never seen any delivery. Even checked neighbor to see if they dropped it close by by mistake. Nothing. That is almost enough to say no more UPS delivery.

Sorry but we need more information. When did you purchase it? It sounds like it was outside of their 30 day window. If so then you would have to pay for shipping. The fee to box it seams a little high and if it was sent back in the original box then unless UPS damaged it I wouldn't know why they couldn't reuse that box. Personally I would talk to Mark (who posts here quite often) and see if he can't help you out. I know this doesn't help you out but my Everlast plasma cutter is over 10 years old now and has worked flawlessly.

I don't think companies have the profit margins they had before covid. A few weeks ago I had a company I buy router bits from send me an expensive bit($130). The shipping label had my name and address but there was someone else's name on a label on the box. It was sent out overnight. Being the nice guy I am I called the guy up (no answer and voicemail was full) and then the company to let them know. The lady said she would send me a label to ship it back at their cost. I could have said nothing and kept it but I try to the right thing. My wife asked if they did anything to say "thank you". Nope. Just the way it is now. Hopefully this works out for you.

Same trouble here with UPS !
No such issue with FedEx.
I specify FedEx whenever possible!

We never have problems with UPS.... FedEx on the other hand has usually been good over the years until about 6 weeks ago.... they supposedly "delivered" a plasma cutter, but we never saw it, or the truck.... after filing a claim and waiting 4 days, FedEx told me the shipper had to file a claim, which they did. A week later, a supervisor was out delivering and I told him about not getting the cutter...

He looked up the delivery, had a verified tracking of the driver going past our driveway, turning around in the neighbor's property, then going back the way he came in on our road, never stopping in our driveway. I called FedEx back and gave them this updated information (different 'claims' dept.).

A week later, the shipper emailed me that FedEx denied the claim! Then guess what? For another FedEx delivery, I actually spoke with the driver who "delivered" the plasma cutter.... he told me directly that he "dropped it out at the end of our driveway next to the trash can"... "I didn't know that I could turn around in your driveway".... REALLY?? You left it out at the road?

I called back FedEx and gave the local supervisor THIS information.... they said they would reopen the case.... it has been another 2 weeks.... still no word if they will cover the claim.... but I am out almost $500....

I have a very limited income and this $500 is like $5000 to me. It took a long, long time for me to afford getting a plasma cutter.....

FEDEX is like any other money grubbing pi** a** company.... they don't give a s*** about their customers

Ah Ha......maybe FedEx is cutting costs, by removing the reverse gear in all their trucks.

By chance, do you have a homeowner policy with replacement value protection?

How did he drop it by your driveway when tracking shows that he never stopped? They keep pulling that kind of crap and we're going to start requiring signatures to confirm that they actually delivered.
