I remember one of the early arguments in favor of CC was better fuel economy. One of the biggest misleading sales lies I've ever saw.

I am absolutely opposed to auto steer of any fashion. Also opposed to auto brake. My concern is they will make drivers even more inattentive than they already are.....

That's not a function of the tool; rather that of the operator. My grandfather used a similar argument when they came out with windshield wipers; it will just cause people to drive too fast in the rain.

I will often take the cruise off on rolling hills, Illinois hills. The cruise will fall behind going uphill, drop one or two gears, get back to speed at the top of the hill, get going to fast immediately going downhill, drop two gears to slow down, then repeat all over again. If you take the cruise off, your speed will vary but no downshifting.

If you'd just depress the gas pedal at the bottom of the hill and force a downshift before the cruise control does, right when you notice the engine starting to bog, it'll downshift and stay there all the way up the hill until it senses it doesn't have as much load and resume back into drive and OD.

Would you contend that auto steer and auto brake will make the driver more attentive?

That's not the objective. The objective is to reduce collisions and/or the severity of those collisions. Like roundabouts. Accidents at roundabouts are less severe in human injury because the cars don't meet head-on. They are going in almost the same direction, and inertia can't play it's deadly role.

Progress with safety features can tend to get "used up". I'm old enough to remember when if you crashed a car at 60mph, there was a good chance you'd die. Modern vehicles today, people routinely survive high-speed crashes, often walking away. So, with certain people, all we've managed to do is take Darwin out of the loop.

Driving north..... my hope with CC is that people know enough (JK) to turn it Off in Snow. Modern magic may be designed to deal with it, but in anything I'm driving, it's Off in those conditions.

I don't know about any of your cars, but our car, a 2013 Impala, will kick off the cruise control immediately if traction control, ABS, or stability control engages. This happens faster than you, the driver, could react to the situation. Therefore, I use cruise control in the rain and light snow if traffic conditions allow. In heavy rain and snow, I'm varying my speed too much anyway to use it.

Use the safety features that come with your car. They work in most cases better than you.

We are becoming poorer drivers because we can.

Sci-fi, even as I enjoy much of it, scares me sometimes....

Your post reminded me of the bloated people in Wall-E, floating along yapping into screens, on those levitating self-driving lounges....

Service logs can prove phone use activity...access to those logs is the issue...
Service logs can't tell if a person was using a hands free divice, reading a text, initiating a text, or looking at a web page. Any evidence they provide would be speculative in many cases.

A few years ago there was a double fatality accident in front of a coworker's house. A young woman got into a head-on with a dump truck. She was on a basically straight road that made a 5 degree bend to the right. The path of her car was a straight line into the path of the truck. The only survivor in her car was her step-son in the back seat. It was speculated that she was texting, but it was never proven.
