We only have over the air local channels now and don 't miss the TV mess one bit. We have many hours more free time during the week and have gotten much more accomplished around the farm. Plus, I've probably saved $1600 a year for each of the last five years. That's a whole bunch of implements.

The final straw with the legalese contract presented to us to electronically sign and the pricey demands made on our paying for our (their) rental equipment. Plus added charges for all sorts of things. I'm not signing a six page contract just to watch old westerns. Buh-bye.
We have a channel on the over the air TV thats dedicated to old westerns called grit. I've found myself kicking it on when I'm home by myself on a rainy day.

The Geico/Ratt Problemwas funny when I first saw it.

I liked that one too, still see it from time to time. Given that the band was a one-hit wonder, and that hit was 35 years ago I wonder how many viewers got it.

I have to wonder how much business they lose because of their stupid commercials.

When I was in HS a local car dealer ran a radio spot which took the entire 30 seconds to say "At Rowe Ford we belive that nobody should get a bad deal. Nobody."
It was so obnoxious that radio DJs would talk about it... they tried to improve it but finally gave up. My mother said she heard a spot where he started talking, then there was the sound of a gunshot and somebody else said "There, took care of that!"

Yet 40+ years later I still remember it, so it did it's job.

Which is the whole point. The really annoying ones tend to stand out from the pack. There is one car dealer around here who literally phones his ads in, but they seem to be effective. He sells more cars in a month than the dealership did in a year before he bought it.

Most of our TV channels come from Portland, and we see the Rowe ads. They seem pretty bland actually.

We only have OTA with a DVR. I guess I missed these ads, but that's fine with me since I don't see any ads with my DVR.

This was close to 50 years ago. Even they realized that it was a boondoggle. I agree with what you say about the obnoxious ads standing out though, they even discussed that in some marketing class I took years ago. Not everyone is as stubborn as I am, avoiding places because they're obnoxious. (I also refuse to do business with a place if they can't even spell "Lobster" correctly. ;))

I stopped watching the tube several years ago, it started with the stupid commercials that I couldn't figure out what they were advertising.

I find the cellphone ads to be the most confusing (especially Apple stuff). I just shake my head and wonder what about this expensive ad is supposed to make me want to buy one of their products? Car ads are a close second...lots of footage of cars driving down streets or winding roads but not much else.

It's been a lot longer for that for me; I didn't even realize that many of the pithy phrases which people use came from TV shows. I've never watched Seinfield or seen the attraction of the show. "Trailer Park Boys", "Jackass", "Bevus and Butthead"... people actually think they're funny?

I almost never watched TV until we moved here in 2005. Most of what we watch is CBS shows...there are a few good ones. Have never seen any of the shows you mentioned...never even heard of Trailer Park Boys. Most of the so-called "reality" shows are really lame...Big Brother, "real" housewives and the jungle island one. Don't get the appeal of those at all. We do like the Phil Keoghan-produced ones (Amazing Race and Tough As Nails)...they seem to avoid all the drama and ganging up on cast members.
My wife likes Schitt Creek...it's dumb, but funny. She also likes Murdoch Mysteries (CBC/Montreal is on our cable system), though after 12(?) seasons it's getting a little stale.

I'm not a big movie buff...wife'll drag me to one every now and then...some are OK, most not so much.

Never was into sports.

I went without tv for 4 months but with the rain and associated sequester I gave in. I bought an indoor only antenna from Walmart, $10 , and put up on a 20 ft 2in pvc pipe outside. Works great!

Had a friend who bought and sold tv commercial slots, a broker of some kind. I Never really understood it.

He made the point that in this country, women spend 90% of the disposable income. You Gotta fish where the fish are.

Anyone but me notice there isn’t many, if any commercials that don’t use multi racial, multi ethnic, multi sexual couples, with adopted kids etc etc.

I think it’s hilarious, like a bunch of sheep.

And have you seen any pill commercials lately?

Not sure what you're getting at, multi-racial couples, gays, etc. all buy stuff too. Are you suggesting a return to the 60s when only white people appeared in ads?
One thing I've noticed is how many commercials for products other than dog food have dogs in them...whether it's insurance, cars, carpeting, ED medication or whatever it seems there's a dog running around in it. No idea why, but I'd imagine they have some research saying that helps sales.

As far as pharmaceutical ads, yeah I see a lot of them. What's weird is that they don't always mention what this great new (and pricey) pill is supposed to treat, just "ask your doctor if xxx is right for you". This goes back decades though...I remember when Nexium "the purple pill" was heavily advertised. Never a mention of what it was for. Someone later told me it was for acid reflux, but I can't help wondering how they expect to sell something if you don't know what it's for.

This one is pretty cute. Doug, the emu and the one that got away.

Only cool thing about those is the ('71? '72?) Duster Doug drives (can't tell which without seeing the tail lights). Had a '71 back in the day, 318, 3 on the floor. Great car. Otherwise the ad is dumb, not as lame as the Progressive ones though. Some of the other (non-Doug) L-M ads are kind of clever.
Interestingly, both of those insurance companies are fairly low-rated...maybe they'd be better off spending all that money improving their customer service.
